Cotopaxi is considered among the highest most active volcanoes in the world, one of the most beautiful and yet one of the most dangerous (in Ecuador) due to its range of impact; previous eruptions of this colossus have destroyed entire towns, however you can rest assured there`s no risk to visit the area as it`s activity is constantly and thoroughly monitored. An hour and a half away from Quito, this volcano represents a 33 000 ha reserve that is protecting the paramo ecosystem (short vegetation before the ice line), so be respectful of the elevation, walk slowly, take a deep breath and enjoy of the amazing views; tiny but colorful flowers, high elevations birds, probably a rare andean condor or even an elusive fox can be sighted while hiking around, just keep your eyes wide open and your ears tuned with the sounds of nature.
Early pick up and drive (1h30) through the "Avenue of the Volcanoes" to the entrance of the national park, after a quick bathroom stop and registration we continue to Limpiopungo pond where we can walk around it or we can hike up Rumiñahui volcano to enjoy the best views of Cotopaxi and its surroundings. * Hiking to the refuge (over 4.600 meters) is possible but depends on the road conditions, weather and group interest. Horse riding is available but requires booking. Lunch at a traditional restaurant in the drive back (around 2 pm).
