Avenue of the Volcanoes: A 5-Day Trip Through the Andes

This tour focuses on the best of the Ecuadorian Andes. We'll depart from Quito, the capital of Ecuador, and travel south to Cuenca — the "Athens of Ecuador" and another UNESCO site not to be missed. Along the way, you'll experience the culture of the Andean people alongside some of the region's most important natural sites. Expect breathtaking Andean landscapes, national parks, charming small towns, and wildlife roaming free in the mountains. You'll also gain deeper insight into the traditions and daily life of local highland communities. This tour has something for every traveler. Nature lovers will be captivated by the national parks, while culture enthusiasts will enjoy meaningful interactions with local communities. Every site on this journey is a highlight, but two stand out above the rest: Chimborazo Volcano — the point on Earth farthest from its center — and the vibrant, colorful local markets full of life.

D1 We leave Quito City in the morning heading south. Stops include Cotopaxi National Park and a rose plantation with some of Ecuador's finest roses, followed by lunch at a centuries-old hacienda and a visit to the home of an indigenous painter, where we'll learn the traditional technique of painting on sheepskin. Arrival in Riobamba in the evening. D2 Visit Chimborazo Volcano, the point on Earth farthest from its center. We'll continue with lunch at a nearby lodge, then head to the indigenous community of Cacha and its tourist center. Overnight in a hotel in the community of Guamote. D3 Depending on the day of the week, we may be able to visit a local market, take the train ride known as the Devil's Nose, or enjoy other activities. In the afternoon, we'll arrive at the Inca ruins of Ingapirca before continuing to Cuenca for the night. D4 Cuenca City. D5 Visit the valleys around Cuenca or Cajas National Park, returning after lunch. Book your flight back to Quito or Guayaquil for tonight.
