This question always comes up. Zagreb was consented to be their chosen place to live and their chance for life. Countless marks of the Jewish presence have been etched in the urban memory. Their labor, talent, knowledge, and faith were part of the advancement of the city. But in 1941 all their illusions vanished with Holocaust. Their life, home, was left to dust. Now it belongs to history and memory. Nevertheless, I will try to show you their glow all gone then, through an occasional spark gleaming from the dark such as telling you a story of a Jewish girl who was known as Croatian Shirley Temple . . . Jewish Zagreb is a specialized tour which will let you discover all the highlights of Zagreb with a special emphasis on Jewish heritage in the city. Take a journey through the ages with me, from the 11th century to the 14th century and the first arrival of Jews, to the city, through the golden years of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with the Jewish community reaching its peak.
Our meeting point will be at the Main Square Ban Jelacic next to a horse statue: - We will visit unique cemetery Mirogoj, which is considered to be among the most beautiful sites in Zagreb. It was opened in 1876, and it is called "cemetery of tolerance". The Jewish section of the cemetery is one of the rare in Europe that survived the WW2. - After we will return to the city and visit all highlights of two medieval settlements of Kaptol and Gradec. - We will walk to the downtown area showing you Jews heritage in Zagreb.
