Guide #66781
I'm a German-American from Maine who arrived in Heidelberg in the late 1970s with a single purpose: to study geology. After earning my master's and then my PhD, I often thought about moving on — yet the city never quite let me go. Nearly five decades later, Heidelberg still surprises me. There is always another layer of history to uncover, another story hiding in plain sight. I was lucky to see much of the world before mass tourism reshaped it. In the early 1970s I traveled through South America, Southeast Asia, Europe, and across the United States — visiting places that still felt genuinely remote, unhurried, and unguarded. Those journeys left a permanent mark on how I see people and places. These days, the world comes to me. Living in the shadow of Heidelberg's iconic castle ruins, I work as a city guide — and on a good week I meet hundreds of visitors from every corner of the globe. I share the history of a city that has captivated poets, philosophers, and travelers for centuries, alongside the texture of the living, breathing place it is today.
