I love the island of Oahu for all the outdoor activities she offers: hiking, swimming, canoe paddling, etc. But there's more to like about the Hawaiian Islands than natural beauty. The history and mythology of the Hawaiian people captivate locals and visitors alike. I enjoy learning about them and sharing my knowledge. When family or friends visit, I take them around to the places I enjoy (sightseeing, restaurants, activities) or, if time does not permit, I draw up itineraries for them to explore on their own. From President Obama's favorite shave ice stand to hidden waterfalls and spectacular vistas, I will help you discover way more of the island than you could driving a rental car. I speak some Spanish and would particularly enjoy touring Spanish speakers around. ¡Bienvenidos! Les invito viajar conmigo. If you're curious about how early Hawaiians lived and thrived, head off the beaten path on this half-day adventure. A short drive through the rain forest is one of my favorites. Ulupo Heiau (temple), located at the edge of Kawainui Marsh, remains sacred ground hundreds of years after construction by native Hawaiians. Civic clubs nurture taro patches, providing a glimpse of ancient Hawaiian culture. Further up the coast, Paepae o Heeia volunteers clear invasive species and restore the ecosystem of one of Oahu's last remaining fish ponds. Minutes away, Waiahole Poi Factory serves delicious Hawaiian specialties including lau lau, kalua pig, lomi salmon and, of course, poi -- pounded on a board outside. The Royal Mausoleum, open most week days, contains the crypts of many 19th Century kings, queens, princes and princesses, along with chiefs and trusted advisors. A short hike along Nu'uanu Stream takes us to fading petroglyphs left by long-ago residents.
- Pick up at your Waikiki-area hotel and detour off the highway to Old Pali Road. - After cresting the Pali, we descend to Ulupo Heiau, adjacent taro patches and towering fruit trees. - Stop in Kailua Town, if desired, for shave ice or other snack. - Scenic coast drive to an ancient fish pond, being reclaimed for use again. - Sample native Hawaiian food at Waiahole Poi Factory. - On the return to Honolulu, stop at Royal Mausoleum, if open, the final resting place of many Hawaiian ali'i (nobility) - Nu'uanu Stream petroglyphs - Return to hotel
