You said: Aloha! My name is Luis, but everyone calls me Lui. I’m a fourth-generation Portuguese descendant, born and raised right here on the island of Oʻahu. My roots run deep—my family was part of the storied Hawaiian sugar industry, and my father, a U.S. Navy sailor, met my mother while stationed at Pearl Harbor. Growing up along the shores of Pearl Harbor, I developed a lifelong fascination with World War II Pacific history and the unique heritage of our island. After serving as a submariner in the U.S. Navy myself, I went on to earn a degree in U.S. History with a focus on the Pacific region. Being from Oʻahu, I’ve been lucky to hear firsthand stories passed down through generations—including accounts of the December 7, 1941, attack, as told by my grandfather who was on base that day. As a passionate storyteller with over 7 years experience as a tour guide, I love sharing these powerful narratives with those eager to learn—whether we’re tracing the events leading up to the attack on Pearl Harbor or exploring the hidden history along the North Shore. I grew up on its shores with my father in the Navy, later serving myself in the 1990s. Both my grandparents witnessed the attack—my grandfather from the base itself. I hold a History degree from the University of Hawaii and have studied WWII history my entire life. Let me personally guide you through the museums and historic landmarks, sharing stories from a deeply personal and historical perspective. With exclusive access to Ford Island, we’ll skip the public shuttle and travel in the comfort of my private vehicle. This immersive tour brings the pivotal moments of World War II to life and offers a deeper understanding of the lasting impact on global relations today.

Not enough words to describe what an amazingly informative and enjoyable day our party of 4 spent with Luis Gutierrez. Before we ever stepped onto the sacred site, Luis provided us a historical background of what occurred prior to December 7, 1941. Although our party included history buffs, they too walked away with more knowledge. Luis’ family has lived in Hawaii for 4 generations and his willingness to share the cultural history enriched this day even further. The second part of our day was a tour of the Battleship Missouri. Luis used this part of the tour as a bookend of WWII since the treaty documents were signed on her deck in 1945. The first part of the ship tour was led by a docent but when Luis took over we learned so much more because of his intimate knowledge of the navy and its history. Luis is a fantastic guide with much to offer. This tour is a must if you are seeking information about this special place. Luis skills and depth of knowledge are amazing. Another great tours by local guide. Born and raised in Hawaii with a career in the Navy , plus a history degree -- what better person to give a tour of the Arizona memorial plus the USS Missouri. Extremely knowledgeable on subject matter, plus one of the few guides that can give you a private Missouri tour. Was very flexible on time with the only constraint is the advance ticket for the Arizona. Highly recommend Luis for your military tour or any other tour on the Island.

Luis G. brought history to life in the setting of Pearl Harbor where it happened. His knowledge is detailed and vast, while his stories of history leading up to December 7, 1941, what happened on that day, and concluding with events on the USS Missouri that brought the war to an end were fascinating and well-told. Luis managed our day smoothly and with flexibility for our family’s requests. We enjoyed his company and benefitted from his experiences growing up in Honolulu and service in the Navy, his education, and his compelling passion for the history he seeks to understand and share.
