I love the island of Oahu for all the outdoor activities she offers: hiking, swimming, canoe paddling, etc. But there's more to like about the Hawaiian Islands than natural beauty. The history and mythology of the Hawaiian people captivate locals and visitors alike. I enjoy learning about them and sharing my knowledge. When family or friends visit, I take them around to the places I enjoy (sightseeing, restaurants, activities) or, if time does not permit, I draw up itineraries for them to explore on their own. From President Obama's favorite shave ice stand to hidden waterfalls and spectacular vistas, I will help you discover way more of the island than you could driving a rental car. I speak some Spanish and would particularly enjoy touring Spanish speakers around. ¡Bienvenidos! Les invito viajar conmigo. Join me on one of my favorite drives anywhere: through Nu'uanu Valley's rain forest and along the lush coast road to the North Shore. Experience breathtaking views of Windward Oahu from the Pali Lookout, where the trade winds have messed up my hair from age 12. Transport back in time and place to ancient Japan and a re-created Buddhist temple: the Byodo-In. Sample macadamia nuts and Kona Coffee across the street from where 'Jurassic Park' and several TV shows are filmed. For lunch, I have a favorite North Shore shrimp truck, a more upscale cafe and a bakery with the best cream pies ever. You'll see legendary surf spot Sunset Beach, Waimea Bay and a beach popular with sea turtles. Great souvenir shopping and people watching in historic Haleiwa Town. Nature lovers won't want to miss Waimea Valley. Or take a ride on Dole Plantation's Pineapple Express train.
- Drive through rain forest to Pali Lookout. Get out of car and walk about 50 yards/meters to take photos at Lookout. - Byodo-In Temple. Go inside temple grounds. Gift shop and restrooms. - Windward Coast drive, optional stop for photos of Chinaman's Hat island. - Tropical Farms. Go inside and sample Hawai'i-grown macadamia nuts and macadamia nut Kona coffee. Shop for local artwork, food, bath products. Restrooms. - La'ie Point. Brief stop for photos at this rugged outcropping. - Lunch stop at a Kahuku shrimp truck or cafe, TBD. - Stop for photos at any of the surf beaches we pass: Sunset, Pipeline, Waimea Bay. - Drive through historic Haleiwa Town or stop for coffee or shave ice. - If time permits, we'll stop at Dole Plantation.
