I was 14 years old the first time I visited Charleston and from that moment on I was in love with this historic city. I was lucky to move here with my family in 2009. Charleston is a city that touches all of your senses - from putting your hand on a 100-year-old piece of iron work, to peeking through a gate and seeing an amazing garden, to the smell of pluff mud (this is an acquired scent) or the hint of the aroma of the Confederate Jasmine, to finding a pottery shard on the streets and wondering what story it holds. With 350 years of history there is so much to explore. I love to share these intricate stories, so my tours focus on the different threads of Charleston's history; American Revolution, Charleston Renaissance, Ironworks and Women's history to mention a few. As Dubose Heyward wrote "They tell me she is beautiful, my City, That she is colorful and quaint, alone. Among the cities. But I, I who have known, Her tenderness, her courage, and her pity, Have felt her forces mold me, mind, and bone, Life after life, up from her first beginning. How can I think of her in wood and stone! I would love to share her story with you. When people think of the influential colonies of the American Revolution, they think of Massachusetts and Pennsylvania and the cities of Philadelphia and Boston but not the colony of South Carolina or Charleston. South Carolina was "the seat of the war". More battles and skirmishes were fought here than in any other colony. Politically, these Carolinians were a powerful group of men who were significate in the creation of our country. This 2-hour walking tour will explore Charleston during the American Revolution and how this "royal city" with its divided loyalties would shape the future of this country.
We will walk through the neighborhoods South of Broad to see buildings such as the Old Exchange and the homes of John and Edward Rutledge, Charles Pinckney, Thomas Heyward to name a few and to hear the stories about those influential Charlestonians and how instrumental they were in the fight for liberty. Customize your tour with a visit to the Heyward Washington House or the Old Exchange, I can arrange that for you. Entrance fees to these buildings are not part of the walking tour. We walk about a mile and a half. Please wear comfortable shoes, bring a bottle of water, and use the restroom before the tour starts. Sorry, there are no restrooms on the tour.
