Hello! Thank you for taking the time to read my Tours By Locals page. My friends call me Kay and I would love to bring to life for you the history, architecture, and personality that makes me love Charleston so much. I have lived in various regions of the US over the years and when my husband and I moved to the south many years ago, it was like coming home! My love of teaching, history, and meeting new people are the perfect combination to lead you on a unique tour through Charleston and share our remarkable history. Whether you are interested in our centuries of gorgeous architecture, our significant political and military history, slavery and the Gullah culture, or the compelling stories of the residents of Lowcountry plantations, my goal is to keep you interested and engaged during your entire tour! I have a Master's Degree in Education and I am an AMI certified Montessori teacher. I am also a Certified Guide for the City of Charleston, a member of the Palmetto Guild and the Charleston Tour Association. I am certified as a Head Docent with the Charleston Horticulture Society and I participate in continuing education monthly to keep my certification active! I love customizing my tours so everyone has a good time! If you don't see what you are looking for in my published tours, please reach out to me so I can help customize a tour for your time and interests. I live with my husband, two teenage children, two easy going labradors and one speedy cat. If you are planning a trip to visit Charleston, let me show you why so many people fall in love with this charming city. I did years ago on my first visit and I do again, every time I share its wonders with others. Learn why we are called the "Holy City" and see historic buildings, churches, parks and gardens. You'll have time to get out and walk, take pictures, and see streets and alleys that make Charleston unique. After taking in the sights on the peninsula, we will cross the beautiful Arthur Ravenel Jr. bridge to Mt. Pleasant and visit Boone Hall. Boone Hall is my favorite plantation. It has the longest alley of oaks, nine intact enslaved cabins (each one is on the historic register and is a mini-museum) and they have a presentation about the Gullah culture.
We will start at the cruise terminal, hotel, or place of your choice. I will drive/walk you around the city of Charleston and show you all the famous places: 4 Corners of Law High Battery Rainbow Row hidden alleys the house used in the "The Notebook" French Huguenot Church St. Philip's Church spot where the ordinance of Session was signed Powder Magazine (oldest secular building in the state) and more! -Along the way enjoy learning the history of our colonial city - See the beautiful architecture and learn about the people who settled here - Next, we will cross the Cooper River and head over to Mt. Pleasant and learn about plantation life in the 17 and 1800s - Take a tour of the house, walk through old Enslaved Cabins, and learn about the Gullah culture. We will finish the tour where we started or at a nearby location of your choosing. Please contact me for groups larger than 6 people for accommodations.
