Charleston Highlights Driving Tour

Al Ray gave us colorful descriptions of Charleston history using sites, homes, scenic views, public buildings, and a plaque showing the original walled city. We mostly rode in an air conditioned SUV with large clear sunroof, but also walked in lovely shaded streets and alleyways to see Phillip gate, original 17th century buildings , view of Fort Sumter and revitalized King Street . Highly recommend! Al knew everything !

Al was an informative and entertaining guide. His knowledge of Charleston is extensive, and he covered the history well. Make sure you discuss the size of the vehicle for transportation with Al before the tour. We were a group of five, and the SUV we were in was too small for our group, resulting in an uncomfortable time for the three of us in the third row.

We toured Charleston by car with Al on a rainy day after disembarking from our cruise ship, and it turned out to be a wonderful experience. Al followed the itinerary outlined in his tour description closely, and every stop was interesting and well-planned. I had visited Charleston years ago and remembered touring some of the historic homes, but I hadn’t appreciated the city’s deep history the way I did this time. Al brought it to life with fascinating stories and insights—I’d almost forgotten just how old Charleston really is! I loved seeing the mix of architectural styles, from the early colonial years through the Victorian era, as well as getting a glimpse of some of the city’s newer developments. Al was personable, engaging, and incredibly knowledgeable, while Josh handled the driving smoothly. They even made time for a quick stop at a drugstore, which we really appreciated.

We had a wonderful afternoon with Al as our tour guide. His grasp of Charleston’s history and great affection for the city were infectious. He is a great storyteller & shares the history of the city with interesting anecdotes, humor and respect. We highly recommend Al as a tour guide. Thank you Tours By Locals for once again providing a great experience.

The tour guide could not have been more accommodating. He is excellent with communication when arranging the tour. We were concerned about the hurricane and our ability to dick, and he was very reassuring. He picked us up on time. My father had a walker and a scooter and he was very helpful with those devices. His knowledge of the area, its history and its architecture could not have been better. Overall a wonderful experience.
