Trakai town is the ancient capital of Lithuania. Located 28 km west of Vilnius, it is one of the most popular resorts in the Baltic states. The Trakai region boasts 197 lakes, with 5 in Trakai town alone. The Island Castle is one of the most frequently visited historical and architectural monuments in Lithuania. The Karaites, a small ethnic minority, have been living in Trakai for about 600 years, and it is fascinating to acquaint yourself with their culture. You can taste their national dish, kibinai, in one of Trakai restaurants. I would be happy to help you find a good restaurant.
We can also visit Užutrakis Palace, which features a beautiful English-style park designed by landscape architect Édouard François André, who was once appointed Head Gardener of Paris. This tour is recommended for those who enjoy old architecture, history, culture, and nature.

The so called "Station" district is a very colourful place of Vilnius. Lithuanians, Jews, Russians, Byelorussians and many other nationalities share this strange place.

XIXth century apartment houses, former tiny Jewish factories, ancient underground passages and The Hangman's Hill are all part of daily life here.

The walk will take you past my house - a former property of the aunt of the revolutionary Lev Trotsky and a Gestapo hotel.

Between Wednesday - Sunday (until 3 PM), the tour includes a tasting at an old local market.

Immerse yourself in the relaxed atmosphere surrounded by lakes, castles, old wooden architecture. The old capital of Lithuania may look like a small town today, but it would be hard to find another place so full of history and culture. The beautiful medieval castle in the middle of the lake is just one of many attractions (and one of two castles). The town has been incredibly multicultural and to this day we can find 3 different religions & related holy buildings.

Did you know that Trakai houses the second biggest community of Caraite people? There are just about 60 of them , but their culture, language, architecture & food survives here. It's a very rare opportunity to see their 'church' called a Kenesa and to try their cuisine.

We also visit a picturesque Romanticism era mansion on the other side of the lake, which is only accessible by car.

40min drive outside of Vilnius there is a town called Trakai, considered the de facto medieval Lithuanian capital because Duke Vytautas the Great preferred the natural landscape punctuated by azure lakes and lush islands over Vilnius. Trakai Castle is a red brick, fairy-tale like fortress built by Vytautas and his father in the 14-15th centuries to fend off Germanic knights.

After our visit to the main attraction - the Trakai Island Castle - we'll take a serene walk through Trakai to explore and learn more about the history and Karaim people. The story of this unique ethnic group started in Lithuania in the 14th century and is still flourishing today, therefore in no way can be separated from the story of Trakai. An absolute must do when in Trakai - trying traditional Karaim cuisine specialties, such as kibinai (savoury meat pastries).
