Welcome to Riga! I grew up in Australia in a Latvian family, and when I came to Riga 25 years ago I fell in love with the place and never left! It's a place of stunning beauty (whatever the season - there are parks galore), fascinating history (did you know the guy who invented blue jeans came from Riga?), intriguing food (try the garlic rye bread or the hemp butter), sensational beer (I'll point you towards the best brewpubs) - and it is a joy for me to share it with visitors from around the world. In my 25 years here, I've worked as a journalist, a translator and for the last six years a tour guide. So telling stories is my thing, and there are lots of amazing ones in Latvia! Let me introduce you to the romantic, medieval cobblestone streets of the Old Town, the magnificent Art Nouveau buildings on the boulevards, delightful old wooden houses, freaky Soviet structures and much, much more! Overview of your Riga tour
Housed in five World War One Zeppelin hangars, Riga's Central Market is an incredible experience for all the senses. On this tour, we'll explore the bazaar and get a taste of scrumptious Latvian delicacies. First, i'll take you on a culinary history tour of Old Riga, sharing stories of medieval feasts and the city's signature drink, Riga Black Balsam. I'll also point out wonderful restaurants offering diverse local cuisine. Then we enter the market and do some shopping! We will buy cheese, ham, pickles, pastries and smoked fish, which we'll enjoy with a beer in the food hall of the market. The tasting plate and a pint (500 ml) of local craft beer are included in the tour price.
Your Riga tour itinerary
First, we take a stroll in Old Riga, where I'll share some culinary history and point out delightful local eateries. Next, we explore the sights, sounds and tastes of Europe's largest indoor food market. We'll go shopping for Latvian delicacies then devour them over a beer in the food court. Finally, I'll walk with you back to Old Town or the cruise port.
