The Hill of Crosses in Lithuania is one of the country’s most spiritual landmarks. Located near Šiauliai, it holds over 100,000 crosses, rosaries, and symbols of faith and remembrance. The tradition began in the mid-19th century, when locals placed crosses to honour loved ones lost during uprisings against Tsarist Russia. During the Soviet era, the site became a quiet act of resistance — even when bulldozed, people rebuilt it at night. Today, the Hill stands as a powerful symbol of faith, freedom, and perseverance, attracting pilgrims from around the world. We will continue to Šiauliai for lunch and try Lithuania’s national dish cepelinai — potato dumplings with meat or cottage cheese. On the return trip, we will pass through Jelgava, one of Latvia’s oldest cities, once the capital of the Duchy of Courland and Semigallia, home to Jelgava Palace by architect Bartolomeo Rastrelli. Upon request we will visit the Tower of Jelgava St. Trinity Church. All my tours can be fully customised.
The journey with a scenic drive from Riga to Lithuania’s famous Hill of Crosses, a breathtaking symbol of faith and resilience. Explore this unique site covered with thousands of crosses — a moving and unforgettable experience. Continue to Šiauliai for a delicious Lithuanian lunch featuring cepelinai, traditional potato dumplings filled with meat or cottage cheese. On the way back, enjoy a relaxing drive through the town of Jelgava, before drop-off at your preferred location in Riga.
