Did you know that the city of Rome has an extraordinary past that can sometimes be seen beneath the modern surface? We will discover two underground sites where the ground has heaved so much over time that it is now several meters below the level of modern streets, stores and cars. We start with the Basilica of Saint Clement. The upper church was rebuilt after the invasion of Robert the Guiscard. We also visit the archeological site of the first basilica, which was dedicated to Clement, and the Roman houses on the second underground level, where there was also a temple to the Persian god Mithras. After this experience, we head to Coelian Hill to visit a true hidden gem, perfect for history and adventure lovers. The Roman houses give you a feel for life in ancient Rome. It's a quiet, beautiful and incredibly interesting historical site: the houses are now underground and still show some of their beautiful decoration of stucco work and frescoes.
We used Sabrina Z for two tours during our stay in Rome. A friend had recommended trying to see Ostia Antica during our Roman holiday so after we toured the Coliseum with Sabrina, we arranged to do Ostia Antica a day or two later. Sabrina's archeological knowledge was incredible and really made the tour of the ruins a great experience. Can't recommend her highly enough and we will use her again when we return to Rome!

Highly recommend this tour. These sights are hidden gems that show the expansive and evolving history of Rome. Sabrina is just brilliant. Sabrina is a superb guide. She is knowledgeable, personable, interesting and responsive to her clients. She is enthusiastic about her subject matter and glad to share her knowledge. Plus, she is flexible. There was a problem with our itinerary, but she found a great substitute for a closed site. I highly recommend her.
The order of the main venues might change according to the availability of the tickets. We'll visit: • Saint Clement's Basilica, upper church and two underground levels. • Roman Houses on the Coelian Hill. Weather: I run tours rain or shine, and most of my itineraries take place entirely or partially outside. Water, sunscreen and a hat are recommended in summer, as are warm layers in winter. Comfortable shoes are always advised.
