Underground hidden Rome. St. Clemente, the oratory of St Sylvester and St. John Laterano

The Eternal City is the most challenging as well as the biggest undiscovered museum of the world. A series of layers, made of debris, buildings, insulae, temples, shrines, one on top of the other, will make us travelling back in time, first to the Medieveal, than Early Christian and finally back to the ancient Rome. This tours covers part of a very interesting historical area in Rome: The Coelian Hill. The Basilica of St. Clemente Is the best spot for those wishing to have a more in depth understanding of the city. We will be dealing both with pagan pre-christian structures as well as with the early christian era. After St. Clemente we will be heading uphill and back in the middle ages. Cloister contemplative nuns will open the door to reveal one of the most outstanding oratory preserved in Rome. The tour ends with the 4th Century baptistry located just adjacent to the Basilica of St. John Laterano , the very first residence of the Popes.
