It started as the monumental tomb of the emperor Hadrian in the II century A. D. , it bacame a fortress with the nickname castellum since the V century A. D. The transformation of the tomb into a castle was a gradual process. In the 13th century, the famous Passetto di Borgo was created. It was an elevated pedestrian walkway which connected the Vatican with the fortress, offering to all the Popes in danger an easy escape route. In the following centuries the fortress was used as a prison, a place of torture and death. Much of the fortifications were finalized under Pope Alexander VI (XV century), but interior decorations continued under later popes. Indeed, by the late sixteenth century the interior resembled more of a palace than a castle and during the summer the Pope would stay here to enjoy the cool breezes off the river.
