Explore Darjeeling your way

At ToursByLocals, we believe that how you explore is just as important as where you go. That’s why every Darjeeling tour is private, flexible, and built around you: Move at your own pace, skip the crowds, make connections and follow your curiosity. Find local guides offering private tours in Darjeeling for every interest, including:

Nature and Wildlife tours: Catch sunrise from Tiger Hill with views of Kanchenjunga, then follow your guide along quiet trails in Senchal Wildlife Sanctuary to spot Himalayan monal and laughing thrushes. Prefer a bigger day out? Head into Singalila National Park with a local tracker for a chance at red panda sightings and finish with a gentle walk through the rows of Happy Valley Tea Estate.

Food and Drink tours: Slurp thukpa and bite into steamed momos at Kunga before a tea tasting at Nathmull’s or Golden Tips to compare first-flush flavours. You can also tour the Happy Valley factory to see withering and rolling in action, sample street snacks like aloo dum at Chowk Bazaar, and end with pastries at Glenary’s or a warm cup of tongba in a Nepali neighbourhood.

History tours: Ride the UNESCO-listed Himalayan Railway on the short run to Ghum and the Batasia Loop while your guide shares stories of the railway’s Raj-era engineering. Step inside St. Andrew’s Church, the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute museum, and Bhutia Busty Monastery, and hear how the Tibetan Refugee Self Help Centre began.

The town centre around Chowrasta and the Mall is walkable, but streets are steep and stepped; public transport is mostly shared jeeps with limited routes and the toy train for short segments. If that’s not ideal, ask your local guide about chauffeured tours or booking private transportation between viewpoints, tea gardens, and nearby villages.

This isn’t a one-size-fits-all itinerary, you can tailor your private tour to match your interests, pace and personality with a local who knows Darjeeling inside and out.

Day trip ideas from Darjeeling

From Darjeeling, you can slip into nearby hill towns, tea villages, and viewpoints for easy day trips that change the pace without a long drive, and your tour can focus on tea, mountain views, short hikes, or local craft depending on what you like.

Tiger Hill and Ghoom: Catch sunrise over Kangchenjunga, then loop to Batasia for the rail viewpoint and the Ghoom Monastery for a calm stop; photographers get the light, history fans get the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway story, and your tour can start before dawn so you beat the rush.

Kalimpong: About 50 kilometres away, this town adds orchid nurseries, Deolo Hill views, and lively markets; it suits plant lovers, architecture buffs, and anyone who wants a wider look at Himalayan culture without a tough hike.

Mirik: A relaxed lakeside walk, orange orchards in season, and tea garden views make this a gentle day; it works well if you like nature, snacks at small stalls, and a slower loop that still feels different from central Darjeeling.

Tinchuley and Lamahatta: Close-knit villages with forest trails, simple viewpoints, and birdlife; good for short walks, picnic-style stops, and meeting tea growers, and your tour can link both spots in one easy circuit.

A private tour with a local guide is the best way to really get to know a place. Skip the crowds, follow your interests, and see a side of Darjeeling most travellers miss.
