Explore Mysore your way

At ToursByLocals, we believe that how you explore is just as important as where you go. That’s why every Mysore tour is private, flexible, and built around you: Move at your own pace, skip the crowds, make connections and follow your curiosity. Find local guides offering private tours in Mysore for every interest, including:

Layover tours: In a 3 to 6 hour private tour, your guide can meet you at Mysuru Junction or the airport, time your entry to Mysore Palace, ride up Chamundi Hill for the Nandi statue and views, and squeeze in Devaraja Market for flower stalls and a quick masala dosa at Mylari with filter coffee before drop-off. Layover tours can also include a fast stop for fresh Mysore pak or a peek at the KSIC silk showroom to see your guide’s favourite saree designs, if time allows.

Religious Sites tours: Join a local to climb the 1,000 steps to Chamundeshwari Temple or drive to the summit for darshan, then visit St. Philomena’s Cathedral and, if you’d like, Nanjangud’s Srikanteshwara Temple or the Hoysala-era Keshava Temple at Somnathpur. Religious Sites tours cover dress codes, shoe storage, and timing, so you can focus on the rituals and stories.

History tours: Explore the gilded halls of Mysore Palace while hearing Wadiyar tales, browse Raja Ravi Varma canvases at Jaganmohan Palace Art Gallery, and continue to Srirangapatna for Tipu Sultan’s Daria Daulat Bagh, the Gumbaz mausoleum, and Colonel Bailey’s Dungeon. History tours often pair heritage with hands-on stops, like watching silk-weaving at the KSIC factory or trying your hand at rolling incense sticks with a local family.

The palace district and Devaraja Market are easy to walk, and city buses plus auto-rickshaws cover most in-town hops, but places like Chamundi Hill, Somnathpur, and Srirangapatna are spread out. You can book chauffeured tours or tours with private transportation, and your local guide can arrange pick-ups at your hotel, the train station, or the airport.

This isn’t a one-size-fits-all itinerary, you can tailor your private tour to match your interests, pace and personality with a local who knows Mysore inside and out.

Day trip ideas from Mysore

You’ve seen the palaces and markets, so use Mysore as a base for day trips that stitch together riverside forts, temple art, and green escapes with ease on your tour.

- Srirangapatna - Walk a compact loop of Tipu-era sights, from Daria Daulat Bagh to the Gumbaz and Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple, and let your guide thread the stories of battles, faith, and the island setting into one clear picture.

- Somnathpur - The Hoysala-era Kesava Temple rewards close looking, and your guide points out fine carvings, iconography, and small details you might miss, which suits fans of sculpture, photography, and calm spaces.

- Shivanasamudra Falls - Two big cascades, viewpoints, and a breezy rural drive give you a nature fix without a long hike, and your tour can time the visit for strong flow and add a simple village meal nearby.

- Melukote - Climb to Yoganarasimha for wide views, visit the Cheluvanarayana Swamy Temple, and wander agrahara streets, while your guide helps you understand local food traditions and craft work that still shape the town.

- Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary - Short boat rides bring you close to storks, herons, and crocs; birders and families like the easy access, and your guide helps with species ID and the best light for photos on these day trips.
