Explore Kollam your way

At ToursByLocals, we believe that how you explore is just as important as where you go. That’s why every Kollam tour is private, flexible, and built around you: Move at your own pace, skip the crowds, make connections and follow your curiosity. Find local guides offering private tours in Kollam for every interest, including:

Layover tours: Make the most of a few hours with a climb up Thangassery Lighthouse for Arabian Sea views, then a 60–90 minute boat ride on Ashtamudi Lake from the Asramam jetty, with a quick stop for chai and fresh banana chips or roasted cashews at a family shop before your drop-off.

Architecture tours: Compare the Portuguese-era ruins of Thangassery Fort and the red-and-white lighthouse with the Travancore elegance of Thevally Palace on the lake, then see the four-faced Chinnakada Clock Tower and, time permitting, the rock-cut sanctums at Kottukkal Cave Temple in the countryside.

Religious Sites tours: Join morning pooja at Anandavalleswaram Temple, visit the open-to-sky Oachira Parabrahma Temple where there is no central idol, and step into the cool interiors of Infant Jesus Cathedral in Thangassery or attend evening deeparadhana at Thrikkadavoor Mahadevar Temple.

Getting around is easiest by auto-rickshaw, bus, and ferries, since sights sit in different neighbourhoods and along the backwaters, so walking between them is not practical; ask your local guide about chauffeured tours or private transportation to link everything smoothly.

This isn’t a one-size-fits-all itinerary, you can tailor your private tour to match your interests, pace and personality with a local who knows Kollam inside and out.

Day trip ideas from Kollam

Once you’ve cruised Ashtamudi’s waters and tasted the local seafood, it’s easy to stretch your stay with short day trips to nearby beaches, backwaters, and hill forests that your tour can cover without long drives.

Varkala: Walk the cliff path, drop to the beach for a swim, and check the small market for spices and light souvenirs. If you like sunset views, cafés with sea breezes, and a slow coastal vibe, this nearby town fits well, and your tour can time the cliff walk for the best light.

Munroe Island: Glide through narrow canals in a small canoe, watch coir rope being made, and see village life up close. If you enjoy quiet water, birdwatching, and simple local food, this backwater cluster delivers a calm day, and your tour can include a short paddle with a local boatman.

Thenmala: Follow shady forest paths, pause at viewpoints near the dam, and spot butterflies and monkeys. If you’re into light hikes and green scenery, this eco area keeps things active without being tough, and your tour can set an easy loop with plenty of stops.

Alappuzha (Alleppey): Board a day boat for wide canals, visit the beach for a quick stroll, and try a fish curry at a no-fuss eatery. If boats, open water, and simple coastal streets sound good, this classic backwater hub makes a clear case for Kollam day trips.

A private tour with a local guide is the best way to really get to know a place. Skip the crowds, follow your interests, and see a side of Kollam most travellers miss.
