Explore Bodhgaya your way

At ToursByLocals, we believe that how you explore is just as important as where you go. That’s why every Bodhgaya tour is private, flexible, and built around you: Move at your own pace, skip the crowds, make connections and follow your curiosity. Find local guides offering private tours in Bodhgaya for every interest, including:

Religious Sites tours: Join your guide before sunrise for a quiet circuit around the Bodhi Tree at the Mahabodhi Temple, learn how locals light butter lamps, and sit for a short meditation if you like. Continue to the 25‑metre Great Buddha Statue and visit nearby monasteries such as the Thai Monastery and Royal Bhutan Monastery to compare architecture and daily rituals.

Layover tours: Get picked up at Gaya Airport or Gaya Junction, store your bags in the vehicle, and make a focused circuit that covers the Mahabodhi Temple and the Great Buddha Statue, then pause for masala chai or litti chokha at a trusted spot before a timely drop‑off. If you have 5–6 hours, add a quick hop across the Falgu River to Sujata Stupa, where your guide explains the story of Sujata’s offering to Siddhartha.

History tours: Trace early Buddhist history at the Dungeshwari Cave Temples and Sujata Garh in Bakraur, then examine Pala‑era sculptures and Ashokan rail fragments at the Archaeological Museum Bodhgaya with context from your guide. Wrap up with a walk around Muchalinda Lake to discuss how these layers fit into regional pilgrimage traditions.

Getting around: The area around the temple complex is easy to explore on foot, and e‑rickshaws are common, but public transit is limited and sites like Dungeshwari Caves sit several kilometres out. You can book chauffeured tours or ask your local guide to arrange private transportation for longer hops and tight schedules.

This isn’t a one-size-fits-all itinerary, you can tailor your private tour to match your interests, pace and personality with a local who knows Bodhgaya inside and out.

After time at the Bodhi tree, day trips from Bodhgaya open up caves, hill towns, and ancient universities across southern Bihar, and these tours are easy to pace around your interests.

- Rajgir and Nalanda pair Buddhist history with big landscapes, from hill paths and hot springs in Rajgir to the red‑brick ruins of Nalanda’s ancient university, and your tour can balance short hikes with unhurried time at key sites.

- Barabar Caves deliver India’s oldest rock‑cut chambers with mirror‑smooth walls and echo‑rich rooms, a good pick if you enjoy early history, light scrambling, and quiet granite hills.

- Dungeshwari Cave Temples sit on a low ridge where the Buddha is said to have meditated, giving you a simple climb, shaded shrines, and space for reflection without leaving town too far behind.

- Gaya city and the Vishnupad Temple show river rituals on the Falgu, stone lanes, and busy markets, which fits if you want living culture, sweets from old mithai shops, and a look at local rites, dress modestly for temple areas.

- Pawapuri centres on the lake‑set Jal Mandir, calm and clean, making a gentle add‑on to Nalanda for those curious about Jain heritage and simple countryside scenes.
