There is a great archeological site in Olympia that we can explore, as well as one of the best archeological museums in Greece.

In the archeological site, among several other remains of important buildings, you will see the gymnasium and the palaestra, the Phillipeion, the workshop of Pheidias where the gold and ivory statue of Zeus was built, the temples of Zeus and Hera, the altar where the Olympic torch is being lit in the modern days and the ancient Olympic stadium.

In the archeological museum are housed all finds that were excavated in the archeological site. Bronze and clay offerings (tripods and figurines), armor, vases, the tools and cup from Pheidias's workshop, the gorgeous Hermes by Praxiteles, the Nike by Paeonios, the very impressive and very well preserved classical statues from the pediments of the temple of Zeus and more.

I will drive you from Katakolo to Olympia, passing on all necessary information, to prepare you for your visit in Olympia. Once there you will have 1 hour to explore the Olympic Games site on your own. Once done we will drive to the Olympia Land Winery, one of the most famous family operated traditional wineries.

Then we will visit an olive press located at a nearby village where you will have a guided tour to learn how the olive oil is extracted. There you will be offered different types of olive oil to taste along with olives, olive paste spread and fresh warm bread.

Next stop St. Andreas beach. You can swim and unwind on the sunbeds or have lunch admiring the Ionian Sea. Then, we will return to Katakolo.

On this tour, you'll enjoy a lovely stroll around the ancient site, as I share details about the various sporting events practised here in ancient times, as well as the meaning of the Sacred Truce & the importance of the Games, which were held for almost 12 centuries!

The excavations (conducted for over a century) revealed beautiful temples, altars, athletic facilities and of course, the Stadium, where the Olympic Games were held.

Our visit will lead us to the Archaeological Museum, which houses all the original findings from these excavations.

On a personal note, I have a Master's in Museum Studies and a BA in Archaeology so I'll enjoy discussing the lovely statue of Nike and other exquisite pieces of art which will astonish you, like the famous statue of Hermes, by Praxiteles in the 4th century b. c.
