Hallo! I'm Georgia :) Originally from Bonnie Scotland, my love affair with Berlin began in a high school German class I didn't want to be in. Little did I know I'd go on to gain a Master of Arts in German Studies and - along the way - fall head over heels for a city like no other. Though I wasn't born here, I became a German citizen after 11 years of residency, so... ich bin eine Berlinerin! When I'm not sharing the city's secrets with international travellers, you can find me on Berlin's storytelling & improv comedy stages, or checking out my favourite veggie and vegan eateries, or revisiting my favourite galleries and museums, or swimming in a lake (but only in the summer!). . . I first visited the Hauptstadt in 2008 as part of a student travel writing project. The rich cultural scene, the historical footprints every. step. you. take. and the heady "Berliner Luft" had a profound effect on me. It was also the first time I took a city walking tour and it changed my life. When I came back to study at the Goethe Institut in 2010, I spent a few months working as a guide myself, sharing my knowledge and passion for the city with anyone who'd listen. After completing my studies, I returned to Berlin in 2015 and have worked full-time as a guide ever since. My favourite tours to give are the ones that help guests connect the history they've heard about with the place we're in - whether that's exploring the rise and fall of the Nazi dictatorship in the former Reich capital, or walking the route of the Berlin Wall and recounting the unbelievable events that led to that border opening up. I also consider it a real privilege to guide visitors around the memorial at the former concentration camp, Sachsenhausen. People who think they're not interested in history tend to feel a bit differently about that after a tour with me. Berlin is uniquely fascinating and full of surprises. If you're a history buff, you'll get a thrill walking the streets that bore witness to the upheaval of the 20th century. If you're a culture vulture, you'll delight in our offering of 175+ museums and 3 major opera houses, not to mention countless permanent and pop-up performance spaces around the city. If you're simply a curious traveller, a visit to Berlin is one of the most rewarding city breaks you can take. I love it here. I hope you will too. Welcome to Berlin! Opened just outside Berlin the same summer the Olympic Games came to the Nazi capital, Sachsenhausen became the center of a terror network that stretched across Europe. A visit to the present-day Memorial and Museum is essential for Berlin visitors looking to engage with the darkest chapter of Germany's history. With little left still standing, tackling the sprawling site without a guide can be overwhelming. Allow me to take care of the logistics of getting there and provide the context necessary to understand how and why Sachsenhausen came into being and evolved between 1936 and 1945 when the site was run with ruthless efficiency by the brutal SS. We'll also talk about what's happened since liberation and how the country and its people have struggled to come to terms with this history. *** This tour is also available for larger groups! *** Please get in touch and I can organize a larger vehicle.
We'll leave Berlin together and travel directly to the Sachsenhausen Memorial in a private vehicle. Once there, we'll: - make our way through the town and discuss its relationship with the camp - walk through the purpose-built SS housing complex - see the IKL building, the former camp inspectorate At the Memorial, expect to see and discuss: - the Model Camp and an architecture of "total terror" - the SS camp guard training ground and mess hall - Tower A; arrival and registration - Appelplatz ("Roll Call Square"); daily life at the camp - the Neutral Zone; why escape was near impossible - the shoe-testing track; extermination through work - the Gestapo and SS Prison; high-profile prisoners - Barrack 38 ("The Jewish Barrack"); antisemitism and the 1992 fire - the Prisoner Kitchen; today a museum home to essential artifacts and surprising remnants - Station Z; the site of mass murder and one of the earliest gas chambers - the Infirmary and Pathology We'll then return to Berlin together with our driver.
Tell your guide which places matter to you, skip what doesn't, and tailor the experience for your group's needs. Not finding what you want? Message your guide to build something unique.
We'll travel to the memorial in a private vehicle with a professional driver. Once at the memorial, the walk is easygoing on level ground with few stairs. Expect to walk up to 3 miles. The tour runs in all weathers, so please dress according to the forecast. *It is possible to accommodate a larger group for this tour, but there will be an additional charge for the larger vehicle.
