Welcome to Berlin! It derserves your attention! It is the most interesting, dynamic and multifaceted city today. My name is Karin and I take great pleasure knowing that you have chosen Berlin for your visit and have a great desire that you come to understand this complex city so riddled with history. I am an experienced, knowledgable, certified local tour guide for Berlin and Potsdam. Even though I was born here, I did not grow up here. I came back to Berlin from Spain (with long interludes in Canada and California) in 1994. What I found was incredibly uniuqe: a city toppeling over with so much history and history in the making. From the first moment on I was spellbound. I became obsessed with its history and development. I talked to people both from the East and West to find out their stories and opinions. Today, I have the feeling Berlin is catching up with itself to finally reach its potential that was interupted with the rise of the 3rd. Reich. I want to share with you the love and compassion I have developed for Berlin and take you on that journey. Even though I have set private tours, they can be planed according to your interests and time. I give walking tours, tours using public transport, taxi, hired car or minivan. You can choose to have a general overview, or go in depth into a particular subject or neighbourhood. It is well worth your time. Explore different themes such as Jewish life then and now, the Cold War along with private life in Eastern Germany, Imperial Berlin, WWII as well as getting off the beaten track to show you the fascinating and varied neighbourhoods, each one with its own development and history. In all my private tours I use images and newspaper articles to illustrate the past and draw links to the present. My tours include recommendations to help you with any special interests or needs you might have. I am looking forward to meeting you! Certified Tour Guide for Berlin and Potsdam Licensed to show: Cecilienhof Palace, Charlottenburg Palace (new wing) and Park, Bildergalerie Park Sanssouci, Potsdam Schönhausen Palace, Grunewald Jagdschloss (Hunting Palace) Germany does not allow tour guides to drive hired cars or minivans. This is your moment—not only to uncover Berlin’s rich history, visible around every corner, but also to immerse yourself in its vibrant, dynamic present. As we explore the city’s surprising origins and its imperial Prussian past, you’ll peel back the layers of history that shape Berlin today. From iconic landmarks like the Brandenburg Gate and the former Gestapo and SS headquarters, to the remnants of the Berlin Wall, Checkpoint Charlie, and beyond, each stop tells a unique story. We’ll hop in and out of the minivan, pausing for photos, wander through squares, and discover hidden gems along the way. No need to worry about fatigue or hunger—our tour includes a relaxing break at one of Berlin’s many fascinating cafés, giving you time to reflect, recharge, and chat about everything we’ve experienced.
Great tour. Highly recommended.
Due a last minute notice cancellation of our connecting train to Berlin at Rostock, we luckily found another train to get there albeit arriving later than planned. Our time in Berlin was limited as we had to return back to Wernemunde in time to board our cruise. Hence our tour had to be shortened. Karin adjusted which included pickup at a different train station later and still making sure that we were able to stop, see and take pictures at all our "Must Sees and dos". eg: the Berlin Wall, Checkpoint Charlie, Memorial To The Murdered Jews, Topography of Terror, Hitler's Bunker, Brandenburg Gate, Reichstag. I only wish there was more time to look around at some of the stops and to see even more. We walked through the "Memorial To The Murdered Jews" to get an appreciation of what the memorial was trying to convey. We collect "City Guitar" pins at Hardrock Cafes and she made sure that we were able to do this. The tour was to include a stop for a Germain treat (which I was looking forward to) but this had to be skipped. Overall we had a GREAT tour. Karen was a wonderful guide, very knowledgeable and her English was great. She and her driver were very friendly. This tour was still "FABULOUS" even though it was shorter due to time limitations. We choose this tour "with mini-van and driver" to minimize walking. It was also to see as much as we would without burning time walking between stops. There was still walking but Karin and her driver Marcel knew their way around to efficiently and quickly get us from place to place and they knew where to park to save time. A reason why my wife and I like taking "Tours By Locals" is the personalization and privacy involved and the expertise and knowledge of the guides. We find it special when our guide loves their city and goes out of their way to tell us all about their city and often learn some hidden gems. Karin was all this and is an expert on Berlin having grown up here. It was interesting to know that she spent time in Canada where we are from. I think that the price for this tour is very reasonable given the privacy and the product delivered was EXCELLENT. Although my wife and I went alone, costs can be even better if you have a bigger group and can share the costs. At the end of the tour, Karin went above and beyond. Because we did not know German, she checked our return train tickets and found that our return trip was wrong. She then rode with us through the metro to the right station and made sure that we got on the right train back to Warnemunde before leaving us. We were extremely grateful that she did this. A job well done, and I highly recommend. We only wish that we had more time to see more and to enjoy the snack. Berlin is such a big place with so much to see and do. I noticed that Karin had many other Berlin tours and should I be back I would not hesitate to take a longer more encompassing tour with her. Thank you very much Karin.
Karin and our driver, Jorgen, were awesome. She is so knowledgable and customized our tour to our specific desires. We are so glad that we chose the tour with a driver as we were able to see so much more than if we used public transportation. Plus, the travel time can be spent discussing the sites and Berlin history. The tour was worth every penny. We hope to return to Berlin as there is so much to see and we will definitely use Karin again.
Our guided tour with Karin was amazing. She is a knowledge expert on World War 2 as well as the Cold War. We also learned about Germany today. She is very personable and a delight to spend time with. Her driver is quite wonderful as well. I would recommend Karin as a guide 100%.
Karin was an amazing tour guide—extremely knowledgeable and passionate about the history of Berlin. She made excellent use of our limited time, ensuring we experienced the most important aspects of the city—not just the traditional landmarks, but also the places that truly reflect Berlin’s character and culture. Her professionalism and attention to detail made the tour both informative and memorable. Highly recommend!
Karin was fantastic! Her knowledge on history of Berlin pre and post War and wall was exceptional. I had a group of 14 and they all commented on what a great guide she was. She has an excellent sense of humor and was very very easy to work with. I will use her again! Susan M + 13 happy travelers
