In 2013, I passed through Berlin by accident—and never left. I’m Ben, a history teacher and certified tour guide, and even after all these years, I still find it incredible that I call this city home. Born and raised in Israel, I grew up with the idea of Germany as the "forbidden land" and Berlin as the "capital of evil." But perhaps that’s exactly what drew me here—the city's layers of history, its resilience, and its power to transform. As a scholar of European and German history, I initially thought Berlin would be just another stop on my journey. Instead, I found a city unlike any other—complex, fascinating, and impossible to ignore. That’s why I stayed. That’s why I became a guide. And that’s why I love sharing my knowledge and passion for Berlin with visitors from around the world. What You Can Expect on My Tours 🔹 History Comes Alive – Walk through Berlin’s most iconic landmarks and hidden gems as I bring the city’s history to life, from Prussian grandeur to the rise and fall of the Berlin Wall. 🔹 Jewish Heritage & Memory – As an expert on Jewish life and history, I provide an insider’s perspective on the past, present, and future of Jewish life in Berlin and Germany. 🔹 Beyond the Landmarks – Explore the stunning palaces of Potsdam, experience the vibrant energy of Kreuzberg’s street art scene, or embark on a food and culture tour that dives into Berlin’s diverse flavors. In the summer of 1936, Berlin hosted the Olympic Games. Airports were expanded, stadiums constructed, and anti-Jewish banners temporarily removed from the streets. The world came together to celebrate Olympic values such as friendship, excellence, and respect among nations. Meanwhile, just 20 miles north of Berlin, a new SS concentration camp was being constructed using forced labor. This facility was designed to incorporate all the lessons the Nazis had learned from previous camps, refining their methods to ruthless efficiency. This is Sachsenhausen.
On our tour of the Sachsenhausen Memorial, we will explore the Nazi concentration camp system and gain insight into the SS, the men who operated it. We will learn about the various groups of inmates, including political prisoners, Jehovah's Witnesses, Roma and Sinti, Jews, and those labeled as "asocial." We'll also observe prisoners' personal artifacts and delve into the harsh realities of daily life in the camp. Located just outside Berlin, Sachsenhausen offers visitors a unique and sobering opportunity to witness the terror and death regime of the Nazis. Travel from Berlin's central station takes approximately 1.5 hours each way. Public transportation can be used, but a taxi or private van can be arranged at your expense. Please note: This is a deeply emotional and challenging visit. Consider this when booking. I am always happy to tailor the tour to your interests. If you have specific preferences or areas of focus, don't hesitate to share them to create your own unique and personalized experience!
