We head south along the volcanos avenue to the Cotopaxi National Park, one of the most visited in the Ecuadorian continent area. "The moon throat" called by locals is compared with Mount Fiji for his shape. We get the Limpiopungo Lagoon at the north west part of the volcano where it is possible to see around 24 species of birds and it is possible to walk around it 2 kms close to Rumiñahui volcano. Then we can drive up to the car park close a base camp. From there we can start our trek to the refuge for around one hour and enjoy a delicious cup of hot chocolate over 15600 feet of altitude. Around the National park as well there are a few Colonial farms where we can get a meal before we return to Quito.
Will start at your place in Quito heading south through the volcanoes avenue We will register at the entrance of the National park, passport must be shown. We continue up to the park to the Limpiopungo lagoon where we can see some local birds Then up to the base camp car parking around 13500 feet from there we start our trek for one hour to the base camp (around14500 feet) and get a lovely hot chocolate from there optional is possible to continue up to the glacier around 15600 feet. Will be the first part from Quito to the entrance of the National park by my own SUV car JAC JS4 2026 for 3 passengers then we change to a Jeep 4x4 of a local guide as the type of road needs an off road car.
