Oak Alley Plantation From New Orleans - Vacherie, LA

Oak Alley Plantation is a historic plantation located on the west bank of the Mississippi River, in the community of Vacherie, St. James Parish, Louisiana. It is best known for its distinguishing visual feature, an alley (French allée) or canopied path, created by a double row of southern live oak trees about 800 feet (240 meters) long, planted in the early 18th century. The property was designated a National Historic Landmark for its architecture and landscaping, and for the agricultural innovation of grafting pecan trees, performed there in 1846-47 by an enslaved gardener.

The historic grounds and exhibits at Oak Alley Plantation reflect the evolution of this National Historic site.

I went to elementary school at Audubon Montessori off Broadway and later, Loyola University on St. Charles Ave in the Garden District. I will take you through my old stomping grounds!

I lived near Magazine street in college during Hurricane Katrina. I can infuse the tour with my own experience as a local and, also stories dating back the the early 1800's when it was the city of Lafayette.

We will start our tour on the infamous Neutral Ground on Canal street where the Americans and Creoles clashed in the early 1800's. We will take the oldest street car line still operating in the United States down St. Charles through mansions and talk about how the Garden District became the most wealthy neighborhood in the South.

We will walk to Lafayette Cemetery that inspired Anne Rice's Interview with A Vampire and talk about Catholic and Voodoo traditions that influenced so much of our early culture and beliefs. Then we cruise Magazine street to get a local bite and drink before taking the streetcar back downriver.

Urban Plantation and the Lower French Quarter

This is a walking tour of the French Quarter that includes a visit to an urban plantation. Most plantation owners lived inside the city and only went to their country homes or rural plantations during the harvest or epidemics. Many visitors spend time outside the city to see "Gone With The Wind" type homes, only to find that many plantation owners actually had a more elaborate townhouse inside the French Quarter!

During this tour, we visit many historical sites and lay the foundation of the basic history of the city, but also discuss the development of the port, plantation life, a burgeoning world economy, and slavery.

The tour covers about 1. 5 miles within the French Quarter and is about 2-3 hours long, with one hour spent inside a home that is very representative of homes owned by plantation owners.

NOTE: The urban plantation is only open on Friday-Monday with tours at 9:30, 10:30, 12:30, 1:30, and 2:30. Note: house occasionally closes for movie filming on short notice. There is no elevator.
