Hi! My name is Leanne and I am a 6th generation New Orleanian. That means my triple G (great X3) grandpa came and settled in New Orleans in the early 1800's, a family history that runs back about 200 yrs. I really love New Orleans, I know I am so lucky to have my roots so deep in these swampy soils so many people and critters have been blessed to call home. For instance a secondline parade just rolled down my street yesterday with brass bands and thousands of people from a tradition that started in the early 1700's. And it's not Mardi Gras! :-) I'd love to tell you about it! And bring you to my family tomb in my neighborhood cemetery and give you a tour of my home through a historic shotgun home. My ancestors are tied into the rich food traditions of New Orleans; from my triple G grandpa selling boudin out of his Creole cottage window in the bywater in the 1860's to today at our local Frey family restaurant. I'm local through and through and that's why I wanna tell you all about this amazing city. I started giving swamp tours at the Science and Nature Center in high school and college. I've been giving tours for 20 years! Serving in West Africa for Peace Corps I learned even more intimately about the Central and West African ties to this city. It was there I learned the real story behind Voodoo and Gombo. During Hurricane Katrina, my house got 13 feet of water and my neighborhood is only about 40% rebuilt today. I talk about what's real and what's legend from a very local perspective. I have a passion for people, culture, my family history and having a great time with you in the Big Easy! I given hundreds of tours to thousands of people all over the city and working for myself it never gets old. This city on any day has something totally unique to share. Ive toured school groups, volunteers, business groups and travelers from around the world! I love people and I guarantee you will fall in love with my city and probably me too! ;-) But that's what New Orleans is all about, being real, friendly, taking it easy and letting the good times just roll. You'll meet strangers who become lifelong friends and this city will become your second home and Marie Laveaux makes sure people have to come back again and again and again! I hope to be a part of your New Orleans experience! - Tour guide license - Louisiana Master Naturalist

Overview of your New Orleans tour

In the morning I pick you up and we drive upriver to bayou country just about an hour outside of New Orleans to where people still live the Cajun way of live on the bayous, off the land and into the swamps of Louisiana. Where we see alligators, hold them in our hands and eat them off our plate at a local Cajun restaurant, tastes like chicken! :-) We go to a local family owned swamp tour on a pontoon boat where wildlife is plentiful with alligators, snapping turtles, nutria and birds galore with our resident waterfowl of egrets and herons and coastal migrants like the white pelicans and colonial nesters. I'm a birder! Bring your binoculars :) A birder and Master Naturalist, i will be happy to nerd out about all the different species and habitats with you! Tour the Whitney plantation that teaches the true story about Creole life, learn from actual testimonials of what it was to be enslaved and working the cane and cotton fields. And why 'God forbid you'd get sold down the Mississippi River.'

The best recommendation is that we would not hesitate to again use or recommend Leanne! She was a great communicator during the planning ahead of the tour. She was very knowledgeable of the area and the history of the area. We are “mature” and a little slower moving, Leanne was sensitive to our needs and made every effort to accommodate us. We enjoyed both segments of our tour (Whitney Plantation and Swamp tour.) Leanne suggested modest adjustments to pick up times to ensure we could enjoy the tour segments without rushing. She picked us up at our hotel door exactly when she said she would. This is a great tour led by a great personal guide.

Leanne is great. She’s lived here her whole life and is very knowledgeable about the whole area. We had a boiled crayfish lunch which was delicious. The boat tour was the best. We saw lots of birds, alligators and a few turtle. I highly recommend this tour

This was our second tour with Leanne and she provided us with another wonderful experience. She was just as fantastic on this tour as the first one. We learned a lot about historical plantation life from a slave’s perspective. We ate great po’ boys at Trudy’s—a local mom and pop diner. We then had a pontoon boat tour of the bayou where we saw alligators, snapping turtles, bald eagles and other wildlife, all accompanied by colorful stories from our 8th generation Cajun tour guide “ZZ”. We will never forget our experiences with Leanne and you should definitely use her as your guide for New Orleans.

Leanne was a fantastic tour guide! Very easy to coordinate logistics and super knowledgable about everything New Orleans. The Plantation was a very meaningful and moving experience and the Cajun Swamp Boat tour was the perfect counter balance, super fun! Leanne provided an amazing day for my family and I and hooked us up with some local flavor that I never would have found on my own.

Your New Orleans tour itinerary

Pick up from hotel and take a scenic drive about an hour to a plantation outside New Orleans We tour a local Plantation and museum that is my very favorite in Louisiana, learning the authentic way of life on plantation and what it was like to be enslaved and working the surrounding cane fields. We go to a local Cajun restaurant where we can try all the Creole and Cajun favorites and try alligator :-) We then go on a swamp tour and get to see all the wildlife and what it's like to be a Cajun living on the water and off the land. Wear shoes that can get muddy, bring a dry bag, sun screen, snacks, a hat, water and bug spray. Please send me a message if you would like to customize this tour. Cost of rental car and admission tickets to plantation and swamp tour are paid separately and varies on group size. Please message me to discuss.
