Hello, here's a short welcome to my world…      About four years ago, I retired from a long and varied career in advertising and publishing, my last stop as communications director for the Louisiana State Museum. It was a dream job for an amateur historian like me. There I was in daily contact with literally thousands of objects that embody the incredibly rich heritage and unique culture of New Orleans. So when I shut my office door at the Cabildo for the last time, I knew I would have to keep on sharing stories about this wonderful city… out on the streets this time, walking and talking with curious folks like you and having a grand time together. That's how I became your ToursByLocals guide. A few personal details. I'm a native New Yorker and Tulane University graduate who fell in love with New Orleans and never left. I live in the French Quarter these days, on a quiet street in an 1832 townhouse I share with two teenage sons. When not on tour, you might find me out in the marshes fishing for speckled trout or rowing up cypress-shaded bayou in my beloved hand-built dory, "Peapod. " On holidays and Saints game days, I'll be in the kitchen "perfecting" my recipe for homemade gumbo for family and friends. Over many years of trial and error, this surefire formula has evolved: "The sea + the barnyard + the pasture = Arthur's As-Good-As-It-Gets Gumbo. " You'll want to try gumbo-making back home, so don't forget to ask what it all means. Here's something else you're likely to hear on tour or before we meet. "My guests are my guides, " I always say. The streets we explore together are two-way streets. And you may not notice, but I do as much listening as talking. So tell me about about your work, your personal passions and enthusiasms, and we'll head off from there for a fabulous day in New Orleans! Our guide Arthur was very professional and knowledgeable (and obviously very compassionate) about the city of New Orleans. The most fascinating part of the tour for us was when he took us to the cemeteries and provided in depth details on some of the unique burial customs practiced by the various immigrant groups which formed a very important part of the history of New Orleans. I would highly recommend this tour for those who are interested to learn more about the cultural history of New Orleans.

as a 2nd time visitor to New Orleans, we wanted a more in-depth look. to better understand the geography of Lake Pontchartrain to the river, as well as French quarter and garden district. my wife is limited to a walker, so getting in and out of a car and walking is difficult, Arthur drove us around and let us just soak in the architecture as he told us about the various homes, and areas, exactly what we wanted. we saw areas normally not seen as well as views of the river. the 2nd day we toured a city mansion, that had an excellent depiction of how slaves lived. as well as a more expansive rural mansion with extensive gardens, Lunch at lake Pontchartrain Art deco airport was a pleasant interlude and then a drive among the lake side mansions. he helped in the understanding the relationship of the Bayos and the industrial canal, and locks was very informative. Arthur was great

Kudos to Arthur for a great introduction to New Orleans. Prior to our tour he was able to adjust our time to accommodate a conflict. He started our tour with a brief history of New Orleans and then made sure we got to see all we expected and more. We were able to cruise the French Quarter and the Garden District, visited the Chalmette Battlefield (site of the Battle of New Orleans) and cemeteries, saw the still recovering 5th Ward, and of course, beignets. Arthur provided an engaging commentary throughout. Just wish we would have had more time.

From your cruise ship terminal (or your hotel before or after sailing), we take off on a leisurely drive around this beautiful, historic and endlessly fascinating city. Like almost everything around here, our route follows the spirit of improvisation. But walk through or drive by, we will cover all those places you think of when you think of New Orleans -- the French Quarter, Garden District, cemeteries, and the Mississippi River. In between, expect to be surprised and delighted.
