I am graduated in Tourism (University of Zaragoza) and an expert of Spanish History and Art. Overview of your Madrid tour
Declared by UNESCO in 1984 a World Heritage Site, The Royal Monastery of San Lorenzo del Escorial was knowned as "The Eigth Wonder of the World". It is located 35 miles away from Madrid at the foot of the Guadarrama mountain chain. This building represents the splendour of the Hapsburg Dynasty . King Philippe II , the Monarch of a vast Empire on which "the sun never set", engaged the best architects and artits for its execution and decoration. People who visit it never forget the impressive Spain Royal Pantheon! Close to it we will visit the sptectacular monument in honour to the "fallen" during the Spanish civil war (1936-39). The Basilica excavated inside a rocky hill together with its 150 meters high Cross are really impressive. The XVIth century is my favourite period of time. I have read so many books about King Charles I and his son Philippe II, two monarchs who represent Spain most important period of time! If you like History, do not missed this tour!
