Hola, welcome to Madrid! My name is Mariluz and I am a fully licensed professional guide of Madrid, Toledo, Avila and Segovia. I am graduated in Tourism (University of Zaragoza) and an expert of Spanish History and Art. The Palace of Villahermosa houses some 800 pictures that were part of the magnificent collection of the Baron Thyssen-Bornemisza, who died in 2002. This collection was acquired by the Spanish State in 1993 and it is one of the must-see museums for Art Lovers in Madrid. The paintings are ordered chronologically and offer an impressive sample of western art ranging from the 13th century up to present: Jean Van Eyck, Antonello da Messina, Hans Holbein, Lucas Cranach the Elder, Albert Dürer, Caravaggio, Canaletto, Rubens, Rembrandt, Renoir, Monet, Manet, Vincent Van Gogh, Degas. . . If you don't want to be overwhelmed after a short time and to miss the highlights of the museum, then, you need a professional guide like me. I love paintings and even I paint myself as a hobby. For anyone interested in painting, the Thyssen is must see! While we were not aware of it's collection, the Thyssen knocked us over with the breadth and depth of the collection. With so many paintings exhibited, Mariluz helped us navigate the Thyssen so we didn't miss the more significant parts of the collection. Friendly and knowledgeable, Mariluz helped make our tour of the Thyssen complete.
This was a very enjoyable tour. Mariluz did a terrific job highlighting the most important pieces in this incredible and large collection. She walked us through different periods of art history showing us the connections and influences between different styles and artists. We learn so much and would highly recommend this tour.
This was an excellent tour of the Thyssen. Mariluz was extremely knowledgeable and passionate. My husband described it as an Art History course condensed into an afternoon. I felt like he had a new appreciation of art, not being someone with much exposure to it. Our friends (we were a party of four) enjoyed the tour just as much and they are quite well-versed in art. This is an excellent testament to Mariluz, she really had the spectrum with our group and managed to please us all. Thank you, Mariluz!
