Explore Durban your way

At ToursByLocals, we believe that how you explore is just as important as where you go. That’s why every Durban tour is private, flexible, and built around you: Move at your own pace, skip the crowds, make connections and follow your curiosity. Find local guides offering private tours in Durban for every interest, including:

Layover tours: From King Shaka, cruise the Golden Mile, ride the Moses Mabhida Stadium SkyCar for city and ocean views, and tuck into a curry or bunny chow at Britannia Hotel before returning for your flight.

Nature and Wildlife tours: Head to Tala Game Reserve for a private drive to spot rhino, giraffe, and antelope, guided by a local who knows the waterholes. Closer in, walk the boardwalks of Beachwood Mangroves or look for zebra and bushbuck at Kenneth Stainbank Nature Reserve.

Adventure tours: Leap the Big Rush swing at Moses Mabhida or learn to surf at North Beach with a patient instructor. Divers can day‑trip south to Aliwal Shoal for a guided reef or shark dive, conditions permitting.

The beachfront promenade is walkable and the People Mover bus helps along the esplanade, but most places sit far apart; book tours with private transportation or a chauffeured ride through your local guide.

This isn’t a one-size-fits-all itinerary, you can tailor your private tour to match your interests, pace and personality with a local who knows Durban inside and out.

Day trip ideas from Durban

From Durban, you can reach beaches, mountains, wildlife, and key historic sites in a single day, so build in time for day trips with your tour to nearby highlights that match your interests.

- Umhlanga Coast: Easy coastal escape for beach walks on the promenade, the lighthouse and Whale Bone Pier, tidal rock pools, and casual cafés. If you like ocean views, photography, or a relaxed swim, this nearby area keeps it simple, and your guide can time the visit for quieter shoreline and good light.

- Inanda Heritage Route and Valley of a Thousand Hills: Explore sites tied to South Africa’s democracy story at Ohlange Institute and Phoenix Settlement, then roll into the hills for village stops, craft markets, and wide valley lookouts. History fans and culture seekers get context and flexible pacing, while your tour can link viewpoints with lesser-known stops along scenic back roads.

- Midlands Meander and Howick Falls: A countryside loop of farm eateries, pottery and textile studios, and the 95‑metre waterfall in Howick, plus the Mandela Capture Site for a powerful sculpture and museum stop. If you enjoy local crafts, cheese and chocolate tastings, or modern history, your guide can shape a route that balances studio visits with time at the falls.

- Drakensberg (uKhahlamba-Drakensberg Park): Mountain panoramas and clear air, with day hikes to viewpoints in the Central or Northern Berg and optional rock art sites such as Kamberg Rock Art Centre. Hikers, photographers, and nature lovers get rewarding trails without committing to an overnight, and your tour can adjust distance and pace to match fitness and weather.

- Hluhluwe‑iMfolozi Park: Classic safari landscapes with a strong chance of seeing rhino, elephant, buffalo, and plains game on a long but doable day. Wildlife enthusiasts who want a focused game-viewing day trip benefit from early routing, rest stops, and spotter skills that your guide uses to maximise time in productive areas.

A private tour with a local guide is the best way to really get to know a place. Skip the crowds, follow your interests, and see a side of Durban most travellers miss.
