Let my young demeanor not fool you - I am a BA in Art History with a master's degree in Museum Studies and a keen interest in social history, responsible tourism, and lifelong learning (among other things). FYI: Most museums in Bucharest are closed on Mondays & public holidays and some (like the Palace of Parliament and the Ceausescu Mansion) have their own guides for interior visits.

The first documents attesting to the presence of Jewish inhabitants in Bucharest go as far as the 16th century. In spite of the "hostile tolerance" it usually received, the Jewish urban community kept on growing so that by 1930 it represented 11% of the total population of Bucharest. One can imagine the huge cultural and economic impact this had on the development of the city. However today Bucharest has a Jewish population of just 2000 souls. The Jewish Bucharest Then and Now tour will try to give you a thorough understanding of what happened in the last century that dispersed this important community. I will take you to its major sights - both religious and secular - and will discuss in detail the nationalistic dictatorships that succeeded before, during, and after World War II. Our slow-paced walk through the most important former Jewish neighborhood will give you insights into Romania's recent history and its approach to delicate subjects such as the Jewish and Romani Holocaust.
Excellent tour, walked around the Jewish district and saw the Great Synagogue, the Jewish History Museum and the Holocaust Centre. Learnt a lot about Romanian Jewish history. Sylvania our guide was charming and informative giving us lots of info about various buildings in the city as well as Jewish history. Would highly recommend this tour and our guide.

One of the best tours I ever had! Silvana was able to quickly understand what type of tour we like. We wanted to see the real Bucharest the Neighborhoods where people live, the markets where people shop, places where local people eat. She had a plan within a couple of hours of our request. The next day we were ready to tour! She is very knowledgeable about the city's history and architecture. Her English is great. She has the ability to read the group and adjust the tour so you get the best out of it..
A highlight of our trip to Bucharest was our time touring with Silvana. She was quite knowledgeable in the history of the Jewish people of Romania. Our walking tour was at our pace, and she was more than happy to explore our interests not included in the tour. We would highly recommend her as a guide in Bucharest.
What a wonderful day we had with Silvana. She put together a full day tour for four people and the tour was split in two. For the first part, we had a walking/public transportation tour of the Jewish Quarter which we thoroughly enjoyed and about 4pm we went to the Old Town area for a short tour and then we went to an excellent restaurant and for a family style Romanian feast. What fun. We spent 3.5 to 4 hours with Silvana enjoying Romanian folk dance and stories. Thank you. You are the best.
Silvana was SUPERB!! My wife and I received an excellent education in the history of The Jewish, as well as the secular communities in Bucharest. She was particularly adept at fielding numerous questions on several topics concerning Romania. Silvana is also an accomplished judge of local wine and fine dining. Her recommendations were MARVELOUS!! Silvana provided us a day wonderful memories. I highly recommend using her as a guide!!
The Jewish Bucharest Then & Now tour will take you to all the must-see sights of religious and historical interest, such as: - the Holy Union Temple ("Ahdut Kodesh"), nowadays home to the Museum of the Romanian Jewish Community (closed on Fridays & Saturdays); - the Great Polish Synagogue, which hosts the Museum of Holocaust (closed on Saturdays & Sundays); - the former Barasheum, now Jewish State Theater, still staging plays in Yiddish (exterior visit); - the beautifully restored Choral Temple, Bucharest's most impressive and active synagogue (closed on Saturdays & Sundays). If you still have the energy and will, we can finish our tour by visiting the Jewish and Roma Holocaust Memorial situated in the Old Town. Just keep in mind that, as with all my tours, this itinerary is very much flexible and can be further adapted to your particular interests.
