Explore Hiroshima’s history, culture, and scenic islands—on foot or by bike—with a guide who has lived here for more than 20 years. I grew up in the Netherlands and worked as a light engineer before discovering Hiroshima—a city whose beauty and resilience captured my heart. Since then, I’ve built a life here with my family, raising children near Peace Memorial Park and once living with a Hibakusha. These experiences give me a personal bond with Hiroshima’s story of peace and recovery. As a former educator and a student of Tea Ceremony and Ikebana, I bring a perspective that blends culture, history, and daily life. Guiding has become a natural extension of my life here, and I enjoy helping travelers experience Hiroshima and Miyajima in a way that is meaningful, authentic, and unforgettable.

Discover the beauty and spiritual rhythm of Miyajima on this relaxed, full-day walking tour, ideal for travelers who want to experience the island at an unhurried pace. We meet at a location that suits you best — Hiroshima Station, your hotel, or the cruise port — and travel together to Miyajima by train, ferry, or boat, just as local residents do. Upon arrival, we begin at the iconic floating torii gate and explore Itsukushima Shrine, one of Japan’s most celebrated sacred sites. From there, we move away from the busiest areas, following quieter paths and local streets toward Daishoin Temple, a peaceful hillside complex filled with statues, lanterns, and prayer wheels. We pause for a relaxed café stop and enjoy lunch at a locally loved restaurant, with vegetarian options available. In the afternoon, depending on weather and crowds, we may take the ropeway or focus instead on forest walks and quieter corners of the island. The pace and route are flexible, shaped around your interests and energy level.

Getting to Miyajima is part of the experience. We usually travel by train and ferry, a reliable and scenic route that works well for most guests. JR Pass holders can use the train and ferry at no additional cost. Depending on your starting point and preferences, other options are also possible. Cruise guests arriving at Ujina Port may choose a direct fast boat to Miyajima. For a more comfortable and direct journey, a private taxi or vehicle can also be arranged in advance. The best option will be confirmed together before the tour, based on timing and logistics.
