I am a retired US Marine who has lived in and around the Hiroshima area for about 20 years. I have been an English teacher for the past 15 years and a private tour guide for the past three years. I have been married to the same great lady for the past 22 years. We have two daughters, 21 and 17. Both are bilingual and have been educated in Japan. My tours focus on the guest experience, ensuring everyone has a great time and sees everything they want to within our allotted time. We will discuss history, politics (regarding WWII and the use of nuclear weapons), religion, economics, and any other topics that come to mind as we spend time together. I have studied Japanese history extensively, and I am also familiar with the pre-war history of Hiroshima. Caveat Emptor: I am mostly deaf in my left ear, but I use a hearing aid that helps, and I have an ambulatory disability that makes me walk slowly. If you're looking for a detail-oriented tour about history with a fun-loving guide that isn't in a hurry to get anywhere, I'm your guy. My favorite color is green, and my favorite animal is a King Penguin. I love fried chicken. I also know a plethora of jokes that my daughters refuse to laugh at, even though they are hilarious. I. LOVE. HIROSHIMA!! I have lived here for 15 years (This time). I love our baseball and soccer teams. I fell in love with the city when I came here for work in the summer of 2001. I was living about 70 km away and was only able to visit here about twice a month. I spoke almost no Japanese and read even less. I met my wife here. I've raised two children here. *With a small five-year break in the US* but I consider this my home now. And I love to show people around my home. I love explaining the history and culture. Not just the reason that everyone in the world knows the name of our city, but also about our lemons, shellfish, and industry as well. We will definitely discuss some sad and disturbing topics on this tour, but we will also discover the true spirit of Hiroshima and the Japanese people. You will come out of this with a greater understanding of why Hiroshima is known as a city of peace and why we say: No more Hiroshimas!
We thoroughly enjoyed our day with Brad. He is knowledgeable, professional and his love for Japan & Hiroshima are evident. As a transplanted American US Marine veteran married to a beautiful Japanese lady he has a unique perspective and communicates well in English and Japanese. He showed us parts of the city we wouldn't have seen on a group tour.
Brad showed us around Hiroshima’s shopping district (great addition) and then led us through the Peace Park. He patiently answered all of our questions about both the historical sights as well as living in Japan (there were many, as this was the first day of our first visit). He was a very knowledgeable guide and the experience felt customized to us. Also his communication and tips before our visit were very helpful. Thank you Brad!
