I grew up in Hawaii, went to university in Southern California and been now living and working in Hiroshima, Japan for most of my life (it’s a great place to live!). Most of my career, I taught tourism, business & communications at university and have been researching, training and writing about Hiroshima travel for the last 20+ years. In 1999, my partner and I started a local website to introduce a deeper and more meaningful experience to travelers and new residents coming to Hiroshima. We raised two bilingual kids here who are now in university. We bought a traditional Japanese house & renovated it into a comfortable home. I am passionate about sustainable travel & business - having a balance with tourism of what is good for locals and also appealing for international visitors. Finding ways to offer the best travel experiences which also benefit local people & environment while supporting the local economy. I love meeting new people and seeing Japan fresh through visitors eyes while sharing my insights about Japanese culture, traditions, history, natural features, modern life issues in Japan, sustainability issues and locally made products & artisans. I love highlighting the stories of "good people doing great things in Japan", so I host a talkshow-podcast called SEEK SUSTAINABLE JAPAN & now have over 500 episodes - it is fun to talk about some of these people on the tour if guests are interested in a related topic. I have an MA in Sustainable Tourism (Arizona State University) and taught business, communication and tourism classes to University students for 21 years. I also do tour guide training in Hiroshima and Tokyo to help guides create fun and interesting routes that highlight local stories and avoid crowds. I do not hold the Japanese translation-guide license but this does not limit what or where I can guide visitors in Hiroshima. Japanese law, however, does not me as a guide to drive customers, but I can accompany you in your taxi or private hire car. I look forward to meeting you and hearing your stories too while showing you around my long-time adopted home of Hiroshima.

Even after nearly 30 years here - exploring the architecture, history, & stories of Hiroshima people past and present is still fascinating and I'm happy to share my insights with visitors. This half-day (4h) tour of Hiroshima city takes in the key sights and important themes of peace, history, resilience, culture, traditions, heritage, locally-made products and natural beauty. Depending on your interests and our walking pace, we can personalize what interests you add stops along the way to rest, eat and drink if you like. The fee for this tour covers the guiding and translation during the tour as well as my own transportation, entry and food or drink costs. Guests should plan to cover their own travel, entry fees and transportation costs. 1, 000 yen per person (in cash) covers the basic tour expenses for donations, entry and/or travel & 2, 000 per person to cover food and drinks.

For our maiden voyage to Japan, we were a little nervous as to how our group of 4 would manage seeing the "not to miss" sites in a meaningful way. Our guide, Joy, did just that. She is a 30-year resident of Japan and is beyond proficient in the language and the history. She sent a picture of herself, as did I--making it much easier to recognize and meet. Additionally, communicated beforehand through WhatsApp--what a great suggestion! We met at the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park and Museum Cafe. The detail of Joy's historical information while navigating this beautiful area was far more impactful than just reading placards in the park and museum. If you are able, try to arrive before 8:15, so as not to miss hearing the chimes (denoting the time of the destruction and time literally stopped). We visited the "Rest House" (Taishoya Kimono Shop/Fuel Hall) in the Peace Park and the "Honkawa Elementary School Peace Museum"; both of these locations had a single survivor. We ventured outside of this area for a sweet treat at Lucky Bakery--Joy showed us the proper way to navigate at a serve yourself establishment, and with her help, we conquered the language of the Yen ($). I highly recommend investing in a personal travel hand towel (Joy has an awesome one!), as napkins are rare--and trash cans are rarer! Lastly, we visited Shukkeien Garden with beautiful narration by Joy--she really is a wealth of knowledge. Ask questions--she'll have an answer! We ended our journey with more of Joy's offered help in the other challenge--Taxi's! Get the GO Taxi app and utilize your translator app! Thank you, Joy, for a tour we will keep close to our hearts!
Our tour of Hiroshima and Peace Park was fascinating thanks to our guide, Joy, who is both knowledgeable and delightful. She made the stories come alive and was a pleasure to spend the day with learning about Hiroshima and its people. She was also extremely accommodating and flexible which allowed us to see everything we hoped to see even though we hadn’t budgeted our time well. Thank you Joy for a wonderful time!
Excelente tour! Joy muy agradable y super informada Muy contentos!
Joy was absolutely delightful. We were a large group and she made the tour very personal. Her knowledge of the city and its history was excellent.
Our guide Joy was warm, friendly, patient, well-informed, spoke clearly and in a way that we could understand. Although we were on a limited schedule, Joy packed a lot into our half-day tour that made it all worthwhile. We were fortunate to have had the experience and would recommend it to anyone. A special thanks to Joy.

If you enjoy walking and the weather is fine, we can do this tour entirely on foot which is enjoyable and you can get a good feel for the city this way. Hiroshima has great transportation options, so if the conditions are not optimal, we can use a bus, tram or taxi to reduce our walking time. The cost of transportation is minimal between 100~300 yen per person per ride. If you have a JR Rail pass, you will be able to use the sightseeing bus for free. Taxis are around 1000 yen per ride per taxi in the city center. Private car hire can be done if booked by guests prior to your tour (ask me for a recommendation taxi co link).
