Since (almost 30 years ago) I started to study History of Art, Caravaggio and the Baroque style have always had a special part in my heart. This amazing season of art has as starting point the arrive of Caravaggio in Naples in the 1606 and its end with the death of the great architect Luigi Vanvitelli in the 1773. During this time the city experienced big changes and a fervid and intense artistic production. The Baroque-style started to cover every monument, every church in the city. With its startling colours it reflected the piety of the Counter Reformation, Catholicism's answer to the protestant shattering of Christian unity. Naples is absolutely a baroque city, not only as a stylistic mean but as an attitude, as "a way to feel the life" that overcoming easy chronologies and envelope the citywith its extraordinary ability of immediate and engaging way to communicate typical of mediterranean and Neapolitan culture in particular. About Caravaggio I love his art. Like Naples, is theatrical but never obvious.
We will start our tour visiting the Pio Monte della Misericordia an elegant building competed in 1670. Within, over the main altar there is the Caravaggio masterpiece Acts of Mercy, considered by many critics the most important religious panting of 17th century. The next stop is the Duomo with its Chapel of San Gennaro, Naples' city chief patron, where each year the traditional Blood Miracle ceremony takes place. Once we left the Duomo, on the ancient Decumano today called Via Tribunali, we can admire the wealthy decoration of the Church of San Gregorio Armeno and the skull motif of Purgatorio ad Arco. Next step is Gesu Nuovo, a nobleman's palace converted in a lavish church with polychrome pilaster, intarsia altar and a a multitude of marble works. From Montesanto we take the funicular and we reach San Martino Chartreuse with its astonishing view of the city. The church shows the baroque hand of Cosimo Fanzago and its decoration so overwhelming that its usually considered the best example of the Baroque.
