Ciao! I am Raffaele, a Neapolitan Archaeologist with 14 years of field experience on my neck and I am an Official Tour Guide of the Campania Region. I am an Authorized Tour Guide since 2015 and I am also a specialized Archaeologist; I did many archaeological surveys and excavations throughout Italy in particular Naples, Pompeii, Pollena Trocchia, Cimitile, Sorrento, Rome, Molise and Pisa. My Studies CV: I got a BA in Archaeology and History of Art with a dissertation on "burials ad Sanctos"; after that, I took a MA in Archaeology and History of Art with a dissertation on "the imperial and late roman amphoras from the Catacomb of San Gennaro in Naples", both degrees are from University of Naples Federico II. I obtained the Post- Graduate Diploma in Archaeology of Scuola di Specializzazione at University of Campania (Naples). Currently I am running a project for the restoration of an ancient Pompeii's building and its opening to the public. Through these studies I found commercial relationship within Naples bay and the other cities along the Mediterrean Sea during the Roman Empire (II BC -V AD). Guide / Archaeological work highlights: - In December 2021 the Nobel Prize Prof. Mario Capecchi was on a tour with me at the Archaeological Museum of Naples. - In March 2021 I discovered during an archaeological excavation a roman villa built outside the city walls of the ancient Pompeii (photo about it on my profile pic collection) - The municipality of City of Pompeii has awarded me the Prize for great and honorable guide and I am proud of it! (Oct 2019) - In September 2019 the Nobel Prize for Medicine 2011 Dr. B. Beutler was with me for a tour of Pompeii. (see pics on the slideshow) - I am also the owner of a TO "Grand Tour Experience", a team of guides all specialized in archaeology, history art and local culture! I travelled a lot, living for two years in London where I worked as conservator-restorer for the HMS Belfast better known as Imperial War Museum. Both travels and the experience of living abroad have made me understand how lucky I am to live in Naples! It's a city with a unique charm, where you can breathe history and art in every street corner, a place where people's energies are so strong and powerful that you can feel at home everywhere and in every moment of the day. A city, maybe, one of the most important in Europe and Italy, an unformed diamond waiting to be crafted. My strongest passions are archaeology and art. I love my land and I could not choose better job than this, where I can show the beauties, the story, the archaeology, the art, I can tell the tales and legends, I can bring you through the secret and veiled wonders of this place. Perhaps there's art in my DNA, or maybe I was born in the art. When I was a child, I was fascinated staring at my father when he was painting, watching colors mixing between themselves on a canvas, tasting theirs smell. On the side of my studies about classical archaeology and history of art, I love so deep the late Manierism and the Baroque in art. I am taking also a rediscovering of typical products of my land, as ' Pomodorino del Piennolo del Vesuvio ', one of the many exellences of Campania. For this reason I am the President of the association ' Le Ali della Terra ', that has to restore the unworked lands with clean coltures as the Piennolo's tomatoes. And for sure, as a good Italian I LOVE wine. I love my job as a tour guide so much to get excited all the time! Meeting new people is a power skill of this job. If you are not looking for a common tour guide, but you're looking for an archaeologist and art historian then you are in the right profile! - Specialized active Archaeologist - Licensed Tourist Guide - PhD/School of Specialization in Archeology at University of Campania Luigi Vanvitelli - Dissertation about Pompeii (Bath House) - Master Degree in Archeology and Cultural Heritage at University Federico II of Naples - Dissertation about roman pottery - Bachelor degree in Archeology and History of Art at University Federico II of Naples - Dissertation about late roman burials I am not a driver but I can accompany you in a vehicle or I can arrange for a separate car and private driver.

Overview of your Naples tour

This tour is the perfect combo for a full immersion into archaeology with me, your private archaeologist. My driver will drop you off at the entrance to Pompeii Ruins, and we'll start our amazing journey back to the past! We'll visit together the power buildings, such as the Temples, the Forum and the Basilica, but we'll see even the daily shops, the baths and the houses! My passion will let you discover the hidden corners of the ancient city, the last discoveries and the objects I've been studying! Then we'll move to Herculaneum: Even if smaller than Pompeii, it's even more precious: you can see an almost intact city! It was the city that rich romans chose as a vacation: many houses are still by the beach, and you'll immediately notice the preciousness of the decorations. I live very near to mt. Vesuvius and Pompeii: every morning I do feel lucky, both to walk on history and to have the chance to share it with you all!

Outstanding Tour of Pompeii and Herculaneum with Dr. Romano Our private tour of Pompeii and Herculaneum with Dr. Romano was one of the highlights of our visit to Italy. His knowledge of both archaeological sites is extraordinary, and he brought the ancient cities to life through detailed explanations of their history, architecture, daily life, and excavation discoveries. Rather than simply pointing out ruins, he helped us understand how people lived, worked, worshipped, and socialized nearly two thousand years ago. What particularly distinguished this experience was Dr. Romano's ability to tailor the tour to our specific interests. He took the time to understand what fascinated us most and adjusted the itinerary and discussion accordingly. This personalized approach made the tour feel less like a standard presentation and more like a fascinating conversation with a true expert. At Pompeii, Dr. Romano went beyond the usual tourist route and guided us through several less-frequented areas that many visitors never see. These quieter sections provided a deeper appreciation of the city's scale and offered insights that would have been easy to miss on our own. His attention to detail and ability to connect individual buildings and artifacts to the larger story of Pompeian life made every stop engaging. At Herculaneum, his expertise was equally impressive. He highlighted the remarkable state of preservation and explained the site's unique features, helping us understand both the similarities and differences between Herculaneum and Pompeii. His commentary transformed what could have been a simple sightseeing visit into a rich educational experience. Dr. Romano combines exceptional scholarship with enthusiasm, professionalism, and a genuine desire to ensure that his guests have the best possible experience. If you are looking for a guide who can provide deep historical insight while creating a tour tailored to your interests, I cannot recommend him highly enough. This was an unforgettable experience that greatly enhanced our appreciation of both Pompeii and Herculaneum. Stephanie

ABSOLUTELY AWESOME!!! If you plan to be in Pompeii or ANYWHERE you are able to book Raffaele- DO IT! Raf was AMAZING! Not only was he passionate and knowledgeable, but he really made the tour fun! Not only did we get to see Pompeii, but we toured the Herculaneum, which was super cool- that was all four of the teen's favorite party of the day. We had seven of us and honestly, LOVED Raf. He was incredible and so was our driver, Sal. Between the two of them we couldn't have had a better day! SUPER ORGANIZED and very accommodating! We will send everyone we know traveling to Raf- WOW! Don't miss this opportunity if you are visiting the area - SO GREAT!!!

Our tour guide Raffaele was amazing. His knowledge and passion for the history of both Pompeii and Herculaneum were just what we wanted. His background as an archeologist helped us understand the history of each city, and what happened with the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. I would highly recommend him. Our driver Alfredo was also top notch. If I could give it more than five stars, I would. Thank you.

Outstanding tour with Dr Raffaele Romano! Deeply knowledgeable of both sites, Raffaele calls Pompeii ‘his office’ where he conducts excavations. Patient, kind, a nice sense of humor we had an excellent tour of both Herculaneum and Pompeii Raffaele knows the personal stories of so many of the villas, stores, restaurants, court and temple buildings. He has personal knowledge of all the latest excavation ‘news’ happening in and around Vesuvius. We highly recommend his tour and look forward to returning to enjoy more of these amazing sites.

Raffaele arranged transportation to and from our hotel in Naples and provided a thorough and enjoyable tour through Pompeii and then Herculaneum. He was engaging and flexible, offering to show us what he thought were the best areas while also focusing on our particular interests. His experience and passion for these sites was clear. I would recommend his tour to anyone who is interested in a personal tour of these amazing places.
