My name is Dario and I'm from Sorrento, in the bay of Naples. I have a University Degree in Foreign Languages specializing in History ("Orientale" University of Naples) and a second University Degree in Archaeology ("Luigi Vanvitelli" University of Santa Maria Capua Vetere). I've been a licensed guide of the Campania Region since 1996. I've been working as archaeological guide for 25 years in Pompeii, Herculaneum, Oplontis, Archaeological Museum of Naples, etc. I'm an expert in Roman archaeology and History, and for those of you who look for something "special", tailor-made, it will be a pleasure for me to arrange a specific tour for you. As an archaeologist, the archaeological excavation I'm proud of is the one carried out in 2017 in Cumae, which is the "cradle" of Western culture. The Greeks emigrated from their homeland in Southern Italy and founded Cumae as their first settlement. From there the Greeks transmitted their alphabet to the Romans who, by Romanizing it, transmitted the same alphabet to the populations that were gradually conquering in the world. So, if today the whole Western world uses the same alphabet it is thanks to Cumae from which everything started. This magical place is where I used my trowel with great emotion. In addition, together with engineers and scholars of other disciplines, I have conducted scientific research on different topics such as the Roman aqueduct in Pompeii, the fresco technique, the Roman construction techniques and other studies of this kind. WHY A REAL ARCHAEOLOGIST FOR YOUR PRIVATE ARCHAEOLOGICAL TOUR TO HERCULANEUM AND POMPEII ? The Roman ruins of Pompeii, Herculaneum, Stabiae and Oplontis are in an extraordinary state of preservation and deserve a visit worthy of their value. In the company of a real archaeologist, you will be able to appreciate the most evocative places of these mysterious Roman towns. What was the urban planning, the interiors of the houses, the daily life with all the furnishings, the objects in common use: in other words, what constituted the essence of a Roman city, and it can only be found in magic places like Pompeii and in Herculaneum. Ciao - Historian - University "Orientale" of Naples (Italy) - Archaeologist - University "Luigi Vanvitelli" of Santa Maria Capua Vetere (Caserta) - Italy - Official licenced guide of Campania Region (Italy) - Official licenced tour leader - Participation in the archaeological excavations of Cuma 2018 with the Luigi Vanvitelli University of Santa Maria Capua Vetere (Caserta) - Italy - Participation in the archaeological excavations of Stabiae in June/July 2019 in collaboration with the Museum of Hermitage in Saint Petersburg - Russia SCIENTIFIC AND RESEARCH ACTIVITIES: - Origin of Pompeii - Origin of Neapolis (Naples) - Aqueduct of Pompeii and Herculaneum - Roman Mortar - Roman Environment in Pompeii and Herculaneum during the I century A.D. - Urban Planning of Pompeii - Urban Planning of Neapolis (Naples) - Magna Graecia (Μεγάλη Ἑλλάς) and Sicily of the ethnic cultures - Structural analysis of the Norman defensive tower (donjon) at Montella (Avellino) - Italy None

Overview of your Naples tour

Herculaneum ruins are considered better preserved than Pompeii with its streets, shops and frescoed houses, but it is unjustly less famous than the bigger Pompeii. In recent years a small museum with splendid masterpieces has been opened in the same archaeological area. There is also a small pavilion where a real Roman wooden boat found on the beach of Herculaneum is displayed. In addition, Herculaneum still preserves incredible wooden objects. So today a tour to Herculaneum is extremely interesting.

Our guide was intelligent, well spoken, interesting and humble. As a local and someone who clearly loves the area, archeology, and history… our whole group really enjoyed our time discovering so many details! Our guide was understanding of some physical limitations in our group and communicated carefully and moved at a good speed for everyone.

Fantastic educational tour with expert PhD archeologist! Dario is a veritable encyclopedia of Italian archeology, history, culture and information. His enthusiastic attitude and professional interest is contagious. Herculaneum is a fascinating unique experience quite different from Pompeii. Smaller, more intimate and much more difficult to excavate, it is better preserved and is not plagued with the onerous Pompeii crowds. Dario is an extremely effective guide with an excellent command of English combined with a friendly and humorous personality. He is most highly recommended for any of your guided tours!

If you want Pompeii and Herculaneum to feel alive, book with Dario. He isn’t just a guide — he’s an archaeologist who reveals the hidden details that most tours miss. He explained how archaeologists uncover daily life: from water systems to shop counters, street layouts, and the rhythms of ordinary citizens. His explanations turned the ruins into a living city. He spent far more time with us than expected, even giving up time with his family, to ensure we truly understood. He welcomed every question, pointed out what we would have missed, and left us eager to learn more. We carried his voice with us for the rest of our trip, noticing details and recalling his stories long after the tour ended. Dario combines scholarship with storytelling in a way that makes him unforgettable — the best experience of our entire Italian journey.

Dario is an outstanding guide. Thanks to him we had fantastic and scientifically accurate insights into both, current research topics such as how traffic and reconstruction was organized and more general knowledge about the excavation. He helped us understanding better how complex and well developed craftmanship has been in 79 AD and how the daily routine was organized which helped us imagine how life in Herculaneum was better than any video or animation could ever do. He is passionate, well educated and we are deeply thankful for the experience we will for sure always remember! 100% recommended!

Our Herculaneum tour with Dario was a moving and profound experience. It felt like a cherished college course condensed into one day with your favorite professor. Dario is warm and charming and so full of archeological knowledge and wisdom that we left with our minds full of history and with a profound view on how the ancient world of Herculaneum was so akin to our modern world. Dario narrows the focus to the life and humanity of the people of Herculaneum at the moment of the eruption in 79 AD - and we have been thinking about that since our time with Dario. I feel like Dario connected us to their lives. Rarely does a guide humanize the historical experience the way Dario does. He is a cherished part of our trip to Italy. And, he loves questions. He could expound on any question we asked with clarity and depth. His smile and knowledge will continue to warm our memories.

Your Naples tour itinerary

In our three-hour tour of Herculaneum we'll visit together all the highlights of the ancient site: - House of the Wooden Partition - House of Neptune and Amphitrite - The Forum - The Public Baths, etc. But the particular interest of our visit will be all wooden parts (frameworks, beams, doors, stairs and partitions) that were preserved by a hard shell of solidified mud, whereas at Pompeii they were burnt by fire.
