Hello everyone, I'm Paolo Mondola, a professional archaeologist and licensed tourist guide (License No. 1792, Campania Region). I was born and raised in the heart of the Bay of Naples, at the foot of Mount Vesuvius, an area renowned for its extraordinary archaeological heritage. Since childhood, I have been passionate about history and archaeology, especially because I grew up just a few minutes from the remarkable archaeological site of Herculaneum. As a child, I loved exploring the ancient cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum, where I was fascinated by the greatness of Greek and Roman civilization. That passion eventually became my profession, leading me to pursue a career as both an archaeologist and a licensed tourist guide. I graduated cum laude from the University of Naples "L'Orientale" with a Master's Degree in Classical Archaeology. During my academic training, I participated in several archaeological excavations in Pompeii and Cumae, gaining valuable field experience that allows me to bring the ancient world to life for my guests. Over the years, I have developed extensive knowledge not only of Pompeii and Herculaneum, but also of Naples, whose historic center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Phlegraean Fields, and the stunning Amalfi Coast, including Positano, Amalfi, and Ravello. This region is truly unique—a place where history, archaeology, breathtaking landscapes, and centuries-old traditions come together. It is also famous for its outstanding cuisine; after all, the world-famous Pizza Margherita was born here. I deeply love my homeland, rich in history, culture, and natural beauty, and I would be delighted to share it with you. My goal is to provide an authentic, engaging, and unforgettable experience, helping you discover the fascinating history and timeless charm of Southern Italy. Welcome to the real Italy. Credentials Archaeologist – Licensed Tourist Guide (License No. 1792) Master's Degree in Classical Archaeology (cum laude) from the University of Naples "L'Orientale", one of Italy's leading universities in the field of archaeology. Professional archaeologist with excavation experience in Pompeii and Cumae. Licensed Tourist Guide of the Campania Region. Specialist in Greek and Roman archaeology. More important than any qualification, however, is my passion for sharing the history and archaeology of this extraordinary region. Every tour is designed to be informative, engaging, and tailored to your interests, offering a unique opportunity to experience the ancient world through the eyes of an archaeologist.

The ancient city of Pompeii is one of the most important archaeological sites in the world, and a guided tour with an archaeologist will help you fully understand the history and characteristics of this incredible city of the Roman Empire. In the past, it was an agricultural and commercial center where about 20000 people lived. The eruption of Vesuvius by A. D. 79 covered it under about 20 feet of pumice, lapilli and ash. It is a unique emotion to visit a Roman city that integrates in all its architectural aspects. During the tour I will talk about the public and private life of the ancient Romans. After we'll go to Herculaneum, another incredible ancient Roman city, smaller than Pompeii, but much better preserved. It was a rich city of the Empire that faced the center of the Gulf of Naples; many of his houses are superb and elegant, showing that many of his citizens had achieved good economic prosperity. It was completely buried by approximately 60 feet of pyroclastic material from the same eruption.

Paolo was an exceptionally knowledgeable and informative guide and the transportation was comfortable and spacious. He has an excellent education on the subject matter at both Pompeii and Herculaneum, including recent discoveries. The pace of the tour provided us with the top sites to inform us at both areas, without being too long for our teenage daughter with a more limited attention span to also enjoy, and in spite of the extreme heat and humidity. Improvements could be a slightly less touristy lunch spot, and more warning on being prepared for the heat. Luckily I had researched and so we were fairly well prepared, but we might have brought an extra sun umbrella for example, if given the notice when booking or in the days leading up to the tour.
My family and I loved our private tour with Paolo. He was very reliable and quick to respond to questions. Paolo was waiting for us at our planned pickup location. Transportation to and from the train to Pompeii, and Herculaneum was comfortable and everything went smoothly. His English is excellent and his knowledge of the area outstanding. Paolo took us to a delicous lunch spot in between both sites. His tour was one of the highlights of our trip to Italy. Grazie, Paolo!
I absolutely loved the combo of such different cities in one day. Obviously one day in Pompeii only but the history and destiny of Herculaneum gave me much more versatile view of the Vesuvius disaster. - Paolo is very knowledgeable, enthusiastic and professional guide.
Paolo was outstanding. He was one of the most knowledgeable guides we have used. We stated at Pompeii which was very good. Paolo had made us reservations at a near by restaurant and it was very good. We then traveled to Herculaneum. This site is much smaller, but way more complete. The buildings were intact with mosaics and even furniture. It was the highlight of the tour. If I had to choose just one location it would be Herculaneum with Paolo. Paolo has actually worked on the actual site. Paolo is 5 stars all the way. The driver of the van was also exceptional. When he picked us up, the air conditioning was always cool.
Paolo was easy to work with and very knowledgeable about Pompeii & Herculaneum. We highly recommend him for your tour!
