Pompeii and Herculaneum Private Tour with Optional Mt. Vesuvius Vineyard Visit

We’ve taken private tours all over Europe during the past month, and Fabrizio ranks among the very best guides we’ve ever had. He was waiting for us at the port in Naples before we even arrived, and from the moment we got in the vehicle, the tour had already begun. During the drive to Pompeii, he shared the history of Naples, pointed out places we never would have noticed on our own, and gave us great recommendations for future visits to the region. One of the biggest advantages of touring with Fabrizio was that our Pompeii tickets had already been purchased. We entered before the large tour bus groups, which meant quieter streets, unobstructed views, and plenty of time to appreciate this incredible archaeological site without feeling rushed. As an archaeologist, Fabrizio didn’t just show us Pompeii—he transported us back nearly 2,000 years. His passion for the site was contagious, and his ability to explain how the city functioned, how people lived, and what daily life looked like before the eruption of Mount Vesuvius made the ruins come alive in a way we never could have experienced on our own. After Pompeii, we headed to a beautiful winery on the slopes of Mount Vesuvius for an outstanding lunch and wine tasting. The wines were excellent, the food was authentic, and the views overlooking the vineyards and volcano were spectacular. Our final stop was a Roman villa near Naples, and once again Fabrizio’s knowledge transformed what could have been just another historical site into an unforgettable experience. Every room, every artifact, and every story had meaning because of the way he explained it. Like every private tour we’ve booked on this trip, we asked to experience more than just the typical tourist stops, and Fabrizio delivered. His love for Naples, its history, and its people was evident throughout the entire day. The only reason we didn’t finish every stop on the itinerary was because of the extreme summer heat—and that was entirely our decision. Fabrizio was happy to continue, but he was also incredibly understanding and flexible when we decided to head back. If you’re visiting Naples and want far more than someone who simply points at ruins, book Fabrizio. His knowledge, personality, and enthusiasm made this one of the highlights of our entire Mediterranean vacation. We will absolutely tour with him again the next time we’re in Naples.

This tour was great and Fabrizio managed to make it the greatest. Wish we had one more day to do it all again. Maybe 2 more days as Pompei is bigger than you would expect. The winery visit was the perfect break and the wine so good we joined a club. Fantastic!!

My sisters and I LOVED our day with Fabrizio. He was the best guide for the Herculaneum and Pompeii. He knew what to see, where to go, and how to get there. He maneuvered around crowds and guided us through the museums. We saw the important things, learned interesting facts, and never got lost. (After visiting both sites, I can't imagine trying to do them on your own.) Fabrizio was well worth every penny. Seriously, if you are wondering if you should book with him, this is your sign to just do it. You won't regret it. Nice guy. Fun day. Good conversations.

Stop scrolling here, book a few hours of Fabrizio’s precious time while you still can. I know what you’re thinking, which guide is really going to make this memorable. So many choices, so little time. If only you had a good friend that lived here, knew everything, and was willing to take you out and share what he knows about the history of this place….. That’s what it was like touring Herculaneum and Pompeii with Fabrizio. His walk is no canned audio tour, no rote memorization, just lively conversation that can provide insight into the topics that interest you most or things you never knew interested you before. If only my history teachers had been so good. And if you’re lucky, he’ll share with you the location of the best gelato shop ever. It probably won’t be easy to get to but neither was Pompeii.

We booked this as a private full-day tour for a multi-generational family group, and Fabrizio delivered one of the highlights of our Italy trip. Pompeii in the morning was strategically sequenced — Fabrizio clearly knows how crowds move through the site and routed us to avoid the worst of them. The result was a surprisingly personal experience at a place that can easily feel overrun. He kept the pace accessible for both the kids in our group and their grandmother, with activity books for the younger members and built-in rest opportunities throughout. What set Fabrizio apart was his ability to reconstruct what no longer exists. At every structure, he didn't just describe what survived — he described what was missing, helping us build a mental picture of these cities as they actually stood. At the House of the Vettii, for example, he explained that the absence of a tablinum reflected the owners' status as freedmen — wealthy enough to build an impressive home, but obligated to visit their patron rather than receive business clients, so there was no need for the formal reception room a Roman patron would have required. He brought the same depth to the frescoes, explaining the choice of subjects in terms of the social and political world the residents inhabited. It transformed ruins into something legible. The vineyard lunch between the two sites was well-placed — a chance to eat, rest our feet, and decompress before the afternoon. By the time we reached Herculaneum, we were ready for it. Herculaneum is a different experience from Pompeii, and Fabrizio wove the two sites into a coherent narrative about life in this part of the Roman Empire before Vesuvius ended it. The connections he drew between them gave both sites a weight they wouldn't have had on our own. Transportation was seamless, and Fabrizio used every transfer as an opportunity to add context. By the end of the day we felt like we'd gotten a window into his actual academic background — he made us feel like welcome guests rather than a group to be moved through checkpoints. Highly recommended for families or anyone who values a curated experience over simply covering ground.

Amazing tour! Fabrizio is an outstanding guide and very pleasant person to spend the entire day with. His knowledge of the Pompeii and Herculaneum sites is exceptional and his passion & ability to explain what happened at each site really brought the excavated cities to life! He also was able to paint such a vivid picture of how people lived in the cities pointing out so many details you would simply walk by without an experienced guide. We highly recommend this tour with Fabrizio as your guide. Lastly, take advantage of the Mt Vesuvius winery/lunch experience between the sites that is offered. It was also a great experience & nice relaxing break between the 2 site tours…definitely worth the time & cost.
