Allow yourself the chance to learn about the history and legacy of legendary Michelangelo, the greatest sculptor of all time, whose uniqueness was reflected in all of his works as well as in his persona. This tour focuses on Michelangelo's life in Florence, from his childhood and apprenticeship to his friendship with Lorenzo "The Magnificent", who welcomed him in his residence, the Medici Palace, and gave to Michelangelo the opportunity to become a legend. We'll actually discuss the patronage of the Medici Family and what it lead to. As a Florentine, art historian and artist myself, without question Michelangelo is for me, the essence of the Renaissance artist. I believe that sculpture is the highest artistic expression because, as Michelangelo himself claimed, only a true artist could create a work of art by "removing" rather than "adding" so as to free the essence of beauty and show it to the world.
·Our tour will start with a visit to Casa Buonarroti, once the residence of Michelangelo's descendants, to admire his earliest works, the "Madonna Of The Stair" and the "Battle Of the Centaurs". Here we'll talk about the influence of Humanism and Neoplatonism on his youth and how Michelangelo could create his first works thanks to the support of Lorenzo de' Medici, "The Magnificent". ·Next, we'll head to the Church of San Lorenzo (exterior) to visit the Medici Chapels and the New Sacristy, with Michelangelo's allegorical sculptures: Dawn & Dusk, Night & Day; commissioned by Pope Leone de' Medici to commemorate family members and celebrate their lives. ·We'll continue passing by the Medici Palace, residence of the family in the 15th century and the first Renaissance Palace ever built in Florence. ·We'll end our walk with the visit to the Accademia to encounter the David, icon of the Italian Renaissance and symbol of strength and perfection worldwide; a masterpiece that made Michelangelo a true Rock-Star!
