This Museum is very dear to me. Among the works, many of them truly masterpieces, the Accademia features a small, humble painting by Botticelli that I consider the spark which gave me the desire to study and investigate the many layers of meaning of a Renaissance painting. Thanks to the sweet "Madonna del mare", I entered the world of the arts and started a journey that eventually took me to become a tour guide. But Accademia of course is universally known for Michelangelo Buonarroti's David. This extraordinary masterpiece attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors each year and is not the only one of Michelangelo's statues here: there are 6 other pieces by the Florentine master to be admired. But the eclectic collection of the Accademia has other wonderful pieces to be discovered. The main focus of this tour is on Michelangelo, but also gives you the opportunity to discover some of the other paintings, statues and even historical musical instruments that this incredible museum has on display!
The Accademia was founded as the "Academy of Fine Arts" by Peter Leopold of Lorraine. We will start the visit with a brief tour of the musical instruments selected from the Medici and Lorraine collections, featuring instruments by Stradivarius and the first ever pianos by Cristofori. We then pass to the collection containing pieces coming from great Florentine workshops, admiring works by Perugino, Filippino Lippi, Botticelli, Giambologna and their schools. We will then dive deep into the extraordinary story of Michelangelo's David, and of his famous "Slaves". You will learn about the life of this amazing artist, giving you the opportunity to enjoying his work even more.
