Are you curious to discover how the history of Florence is related to the Jews? With the Jewish Florence Tour you get to know centuries of Florentine and Jewish history. Even though I'm not Jewish, I feel a special attraction for the Jewish culture. So much that I decided to write my college dissertation about the Jewish ghetto. Florence was a flourishing economical centre since the Middle Ages and had a large Jewish community. Cosimo de' Medici was the first to favor the presence of Jews in Florence in 1437, calling them explicitly to handle pawn shops and small loans. But the relation between Florence and the Jews was not only of economic nature. It was cultural as well. Cosimo de' Medici protected Greek and Jewish scholars, because he was eager to recover the most ancient tradition of philosophy and religion, and he recognized the indubitable value of these pre-christian cultures. Your tour includes an in depth city walk focused on the jewish history and the Great Synagogue of Florence.
- Let's start from Republic Square, where the Jewish ghetto once was. It was built in 1570 and demolished in 1888. - Then we walk to Duomo Square, where the Baptistery stands. It's the church where Florentines have been baptized for centuries. Its famed "Gate of Paradise" shows in gilded bronze the stories of the Jewish Bible and its patriarchs. - Let's visit now Signoria square, to get to know the role that the Medici family had in the creation of the ghetto. - The last stop is the Synagogue and its little Jewish museum, a must-see to deeply understand the Jewish culture in Florence. The Synagogue (1882) is considered one of the most beautiful in Europe and one of the most significant architectures of Italian "Ottocento" (i. e. 1800s). It's a walking tour. Nevertheless, since the distance to cover is almost one mile in total, if you prefer we can take a cab. Be aware that most part of downtown is restricted to vehicles and sometimes going on foot can be faster than moving by car!
