I am a Wicklow native, and qualified tour guide, brought up on a sheep farm, high in the hills, close to Dublin city. I read widely and have a broad range of interests including history, gardening, architecture, politics and travel and love meeting my guests. While I would describe myself as a "country girl", I worked in the property industry in Dublin for many years, and then in the political world, so am also very familiar with our capital city, and it's fantastic range of architecture. Since 2010 I have been working as a guide and love it - meeting new people and showing them over a country I am very proud of, is both a pleasure and privilege! I am fully licensed to drive a luxury Mercedes limousine, taking up to four people so can bring visitors touring throughout Dublin city and the surrounding areas. For city tours, some walking is necessary, as many of the interesting attractions are close together, and you can see a lot more on foot - we go at a pace that suits you! NB: Make sure you only travel in a vehicle that is licensed to carry passengers - you may not be insured if the vehicle does not have a Small Public Service Vehicle licence. On my country tours I can offer long or short walks as part of the tour to those who fancy strolling in the large National Park that is less than 40 minutes from Dublin city. As a private guide, I pride myself on being able to adapt an itinerary (within reason!) on the day, if the weather is challenging or the client requests it - a good guide should always have a Plan B! As a Guide for Dublin & Environs, and as a ToursByLocals Guide, I have a range of Dublin based tours which have proved very popular. My tours in the city combine walking and driving and I usually cover the major museums/galleries/Georgian Dublin/Dublin Castle/St Patrick's Cathedral plus time for lunch/coffee! I like to communicate with clients beforehand to learn what they want from their time in Ireland and accommodate them if possible. Another tour that has proved very popular is my "Farmer's Tour" and I have access to a variety of farms close to Dublin, one of them being my brother's sheep & cattle farm. My family love meeting visitors, and showing them around a farmstead, over 300 years old. I am also a great believer in being spontaneous. If, on the day, something is mentioned as being of interest, we will try and incorporate it - that is why private tours are the way to make the most of your time in Ireland. I am a Failte Ireland Badged Guide for Dublin city and the surrounding counties. I also hold a SPSV licence and have a fully licensed Mercedes (2019) limousine, taking up to four people. (Make sure any vehicle you travel in is licensed to carry passengers - you may not be insured otherwise). I am also a qualified Nordic Walking Instructor, and for the past ten years I have been leading walking groups throughout County Wicklow, visiting historic sites and houses as part of a walking experience. My family have a farm close to Wicklow National Park, and I often bring visitors there, particularly at lambing time! As a keen local historian, and founder member of one of Ireland's largest History Societies, I have an interesting CV - estate agency, politics, and outdoor pursuits, so a tour with me will cover a broad spectrum of topics!! I love guiding and have met some fabulous people since I started and take great pride in ensuring that I add something extra to your visit - in a good way!

Overview of your Dublin tour

Visit County Wicklow and it's national park - just 40 minutes from Dublin city centre. Enjoy a short visit to Enniskerry village - setting of many recent films due to it's quaintness. Explore Powerscourt Gardens (Rated third best in the world by National Geographic) Drive through Wicklow Mountains National Park with a stop at Glencree Centre, a former army barracks with a very poignant history and a surprise. Look down at the beautiful 'Guinness Lake' and hear the stories of Luggala Estate and the Guinness connection. Lunch in one of Wicklow's fine eateries - I have many recommendations. Visit Glendalough and tour the ruins of the monastic city and walk around the two lakes.

Dairine provided an exceptional tour, one of the very best I have experienced with Tours By Locals. She is thoughtful, an excellent conversationalist and made us feel at ease from the outset. She organized and led us on two great hikes, the first to Ballinastoe and the second to Glendalough, with a break time in the lovely town of Roundwood. Dairine is a Wicklow native with a thorough knowledge of local Wicklow history and issues. Her extensive experience in real estate, farming and politics gives her a broad perspective on a wide range of matters and the ability to easily relate to travelers. I highly recommend Dairine.

What a lovely day we had with Dairine! We are well-traveled, frequent ToursByLocals and love day-trips out of the city we are staying in. Dairine is a true local--born, raised, and current resident of the Wicklow area. We were very fortunate to have perfect weather and even more fortunate to have such an excellent guide for our day. A wonderful, memorable day with a lovely person. 5-stars. Thanks.

We had a superb time. Dairine is very knowledgeable and shared interesting tidbits about Wicklow and its history and people. I think Powerscourt Gardens was my favorite experience of our trip to Ireland - and that's saying a lot. It was exquisite. Glendalough was also haunting and beautiful. Dairine earned her super guide cape though on the way home when we got stuck in terrible Dublin rush hour traffic. After hardly moving for half an hour, I knew my bladder wasn't going to last. When I mentioned the need, she didn't hesitate. She pulled into a parking space and leaving my husband to guard the car she took me on a power walk through the neighborhood until we found a cafe that would let us use their facilities. Superwoman! A beautiful, interesting and just plain enjoyable tour.

Dairine is a wonderful tour guide! I recommend her highly if you are looking for a guide who is not only very knowledgeable of County Wicklow & Ireland but willing to be flexible and pivot given unexpected weather as well as interests of your touring party. My mother, daughter and I had a wonderful day with Dairine in Wicklow … one which my mom says is one of her highlights of weeklong trip in Ireland!

Dairine made our trip. I was looking to get out of the city and take a nice long hike with a knowledgeable local, and we did just that. Dairine picked my daughter and I up from our hotel in her Mercedes and we stopped by the perfect little cafe on our way to Glendalough (it was our first day in Dublin and my plans to go out for breakfast before she picked us up didn’t work out—we were just too sleepy!) After a brief history lesson and tour of the ancient village, we had the perfect hike. We got really lucky with the weather, but it would have been what we were looking for either way. Dairine is professional, kind, just a lovely person. She shared her local knowledge on flora, fawna, and the history both past and present of the surrounding area. It was a pretty big splurge for me, and 100% worth every penny. As a single mom traveling with her young teen, safety was my priority. Dairine delivered!
