Welcome to Dublin - Tá Fáilte Romhat. I'm John - an experienced tour guide and proud holder of the National Tour Guiding Badge. I have lived my whole life here, and I look forward to showing you the elegance, history and charm of Ireland's intriguing capital city. I have given to date over four hundred walking tours of Dublin to visitors from all parts of the world, and have an honours degree in languages (German and Russian) from Trinity College. Some of my extended family are however still native Irish speakers in the West of this country, so I am of course Irish to the core. Despite its location on the periphery of Europe, Dublin as a city boasts a remarkably diverse set of influences. The Celts arrived here a long time ago, followed by Vikings, Normans and English. Jewish people found a safe haven here from the pogroms of the Russian Empire; Huguenot Protestants came from France and Italians from the Lazio area settled here too. As we wend our way through the streets of Dublin I'll tell you about the city known to the Ancient Greeks as 'Eblana', which later became the bustling centre of 18th century Georgian grandeur and was ultimately the stage upon which the 'terrible beauty' of Irish independence was born in the 1916 Rising. Hear about the town that gave the world Swift, Beckett, Joyce and Behan - a place with a literary heritage second to none . . Dublin is also the home of modern writers such as Anne Enright and Roddy Doyle; and the city's rock exports such as U2, the Script, Hozier and Imelda May have become household names worldwide . . I look forward to unlocking for you some of the secrets, sights and stories of this fascinating city; and to sharing with you its humour and its history . . I have a Two-Subject (Hons.) Moderatorship in Modern Languages (Russian and German) from Trinity College Dublin I am not a driver. I can accompany you in your vehicle or I can arrange for a separate air-conditioned vehicle and driver. Please ensure to advise the full group number at time of booking. Guiding at a few locations, such as Trinity College, is restricted.

Overview of your Dublin tour

Cead míle fáilte romhat! "A hundred thousand welcomes to you!" This walking tour reconciles your thirst for knowledge with your physical thirst, as well as reconciling Dublin's British heritage (Trinity College, Dublin Castle) with its Irish one (GPO, the pubs). How this tour works: Sights: This 4hr tour takes you through some of the most important sights in Dublin. The stories and histories connected with them, explained by your guide, will transport you through the years, passions, pains and legacies of the Irish people. Pints: Would you rather stand still in the cold for 10 minutes while I explain how Northern Ireland came about, or prefer to be seated in a warm pub, beer in hand? Some big topics, e. g. Irish Language, Celtic Tiger, are best explained when you're nice and comfortable, so we'll pop into a (great) pub every 20-40mins. Besides the history lessons, you'll learn about beer, the Irish pub, as well as partake in / witness an activity that the Irish are renowned for - conversation.

Absolutely fabulous! We've done a number of private tours over the years and this ranks one of the best. John was incredibly knowledgeable and very well organised. Private guiding also requires the ability to "read the room" and forge the approach and tone accordingly. John sized us up pretty quickly and was totally at ease with us and vice versa, making for a fully enjoyable and informative day. We learned far more in 4 or 5 hours with John than the entire previous day with a bus tour group! Do yourself a favour...avoid being herded with a huge tour group and book your private tour with John!

John was a fantastic guide for our walking tour! He was incredibly knowledgeable about the area's history and had a great way of bringing it to life — you could tell he genuinely loves what he does. He was also just really fun to talk to, easy to chat with, and kept the whole family engaged throughout. As a bonus, he took us toward a few great local pubs to grab a drink and chat. Highly recommend John if you're looking for a walking tour that's both informative and a genuinely good time!

John is a great tour guide, friendly and personable with a detailed knowledge of and clear passion for Irish history, and especially the city of Dublin. John led us on a comprehensive walking tour of Dublin, strolling through its historic streets, parks and districts with interesting and educational stops at many sites of historical interest including St. Stephen’s Green and the historic Fusilier’s Arch, Christ Church Cathedral and the extensive remnants of the original early 12th century city wall. Of course, no tour of Dublin would be complete without a pint in a pub or two, and John chose authentic, non-touristy local establishments. We highly recommend John as a tour guide in Dublin.

This tour with John is spectacular! He is a wealth of information regarding Dublin, and much of what makes the city so great is not what you read in headlines. He gives you the history and 'sights' that are more of what a local would show you. Definitely would recommend John for a tour of Dublin!
