The Kerala backwaters are a chain of brackish lagoons and lakes lying parallel to the Arabian Sea coast of Kerala state in southern India. The backwaters have a unique ecosystem: freshwater from the rivers meets the seawater from the Arabian Sea. Many unique species of aquatic life including crabs, frogs and water birds such as terns, kingfishers, darters and cormorants and turtles live in and alongside the backwaters.
The kettuvallams (Kerala houseboats) in the backwaters are one of the prominent tourist attractions in Kerala. The kettuvallams were traditionally used as grain barges, to transport the rice harvested in the fertile fields alongside the backwaters. Ketuvallams are motorized but generally proceed at a slow speed. Ketuvallams have generators and bedrooms are air-conditioned. KODANAD ELEPHANT TRAINING CAMP; Kodaanad has one of the largest and most visited elephants Training centers in South India. This rustic riverside village is situated near the Periyar River. Elephants captured or rescued, are specially trained here for safari. These training sessions are conducted by the specially trained mahout. This training center also owns a mini zoo with lots of wild animals. Kodanad elephant training camp is about 42 km from Cochin city.
ATHIRAPALLY WATERFALLS; is one of the most popular tourist places in Kerala. , which attracts tourists all year round. This splendid waterfall, about 80 feet high, is located at the entrance of Sholayar ranges.

Houseboat Experience of Kerala in Backwaters.

Houseboats once were spice boats or rice boats which used to carry black pepper, ginger, cardamom, cloves, turmeric, and later cashew nuts, tea coffee, rice, rubber and coir. The spice boats now innovated into luxury houseboats for hosting tourists from world over.

Made from teak it has caulked hull with bamboo roof. Bedrooms spacious for two and laid with Cambridge white bed linen and have attached powder rooms. This house boat meanders through the backwaters studded with coconut groves and lush green paddy fields. Paddy fields attract us as they lie below sea level.

We can witness the life of villagers educated and prosperous on the banks. Bungalows or rich houses of prosperous people painted in bright colors and churches, and temples also adorn the banks.

Kochi was the first european colony for the Portuguese in colonial India from the year 1500-1663, followed by the Dutch and later by the British. It is the old buildings which most clearly reveal this deep-rooted colonial influence. In 1947, when India gained independence from the British colonial rule, Cochin was the first princely state to join the Indian Union willingly.

It is one of the oldest village in Kerala and an excellent representation of the rural life in the region.
