Opened just outside Berlin the same summer the Olympic Games came to the Nazi capital, Sachsenhausen became the center of a terror network that stretched across Europe. A visit to the present-day Memorial and Museum is essential for Berlin visitors looking to engage with the darkest chapter of Germany's history. With little left still standing, tackling the sprawling site without a guide can be overwhelming. Allow me to take care of the logistics of getting there and provide the context necessary to understand how and why Sachsenhausen came into being and evolved between 1936 and 1945 when the site was run with ruthless efficiency by the brutal SS. We'll also talk about what's happened since liberation and how the country and its people have struggled to come to terms with this history. *** This tour is also available for larger groups! *** Please get in touch and I can organize a larger vehicle.
We'll leave Berlin together and travel directly to the Sachsenhausen Memorial in a private vehicle. Once there, we'll: - make our way through the town and discuss its relationship with the camp - walk through the purpose-built SS housing complex - see the IKL building, the former camp inspectorate At the Memorial, expect to see and discuss: - the Model Camp and an architecture of "total terror" - the SS camp guard training ground & mess hall - Tower A; arrival & registration - Appelplatz ("Roll Call Square"); daily life at the camp - the Neutral Zone; why escape was near impossible - the shoe-testing track; extermination through work - the Gestapo & SS Prison; high-profile prisoners - Barrack 38 ("The Jewish Barrack"); antisemitism and the 1992 fire - the Prisoner Kitchen; today a museum home to essential artifacts and surprising remnants - Station Z; the site of mass murder and one of the earliest gas chambers - the Infirmary and Pathology We'll then return to Berlin together with our driver.

We'll travel to the memorial in a private vehicle with a professional driver. Once at the memorial, the walk is easygoing on level ground with few stairs. Expect to walk up to 3 miles. The tour runs in all weathers, so please dress according to the forecast. *It is possible to accommodate a larger group for this tour, but there will be an additional charge for the larger vehicle.
