Located near Berlin, Potsdam is the former residence of Prussian kings, and kaisers and is known today primarily for its magnificent palaces and beautiful gardens. They were commissioned between 1730 and 1916 and are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The most famous is the Rococo palace of Sanssouci, summer residence of Frederick the Great, with its magnificent park. The historical center has its Brandenburg Gate too, one of the three gates from the original city wall. In Potsdam's historical city centre, the Old Market Square is dominated today by the dome of St. Nicholas' Church, built in 1837 in the Neoclassical style. For three centuries this was the site of the royal City Palace, built in 1662. Another landmark of Potsdam is the Dutch Quarter, an ensemble of buildings of red brick in the Dutch style that is unique in Europe.
