Hidden Cairo: Garbage City, Cave Church & The City of the Dead

Nahla's tour of Cairo's garbage city and Coptic (Christian) churches was fabulous. Go where other tourists rarely go and see an important part of everyday Cairo. Anyone with environmentalist interests or concern should take this tour. An entire community collects Cairo's garbage, sorts it by hand, cleans it, returns it to raw materials, uses the raw materials to manufacture new products, and sells these products in "garbage city" and all over the world. Everything is used, nothing is wasted. Nahla explains it all beautifully. I loved that she did not rush us. There is nothing scary or smelly about this tour. Nahla guides perfectly through the beehive of urban activity. I highly recommend this tour. The Christian sites (and even an old synagogue) are amazing, too. Yes, you must see the pyramids with their thousands of tourists, but this is special in its own unique way.

Nahlia was ready to make the tour custom. Her driver was fun and in tune with our group. We felt like we could spend as much or as little time as we wanted in all of the spots. She took great care of us! We were happy to have her!

We had a day & 1/2 and wanted a non traditional tour of Cairo. We wanted to see, experience, & get an understanding of the life & culture. Nahla was the ABSOLUTE PERFECT fit. She & her driver gave us an overview of the city, then a special tour of Sabaleen City, Cave Church, a visit with a City of the Dead family, Gayer Anderson Museum, Coptic church. Nahla is EXTREMELY knowledgeable of Egyptian history & current events. We had a fun time while learning so much, & now Falafels are our favorite food! :-)

Our tour of Garbage City was outstanding! We were able to see and learn about parts of Cairo that most visitors do not experience, including the Coptic enterprise of garbage collection, as well as 2 cave churches and Cemetary City. Ms. Elkadi's private tour of Garbage City, Saint Samaan Cave Church, and the City of the Dead was a wonderful guided experience. Off the beaten path, this tour gave us a look into a side of Cairo city life that may often be missed in favor of the more well-known tour sites. Ms. Elkadi is a very knowledgeable and excellent guide, giving us insight into the history and lives of the people living in these areas. If you are looking for a unique Cairo tour, I recommend this tour with Ms. Elkadi.

Seeing Garbage City in Cairo was an unexpected tour. This is a part of Cairo that is not on most of the tourist list for sightseeing. Nahla did an excellent job of explaining the garbage collection and recycling process that is garbage City. In addition we visited several of the old Coptic churches which was a real wonderful experience. For an unusual off the beaten track tour in Cairo we recommend Nahla's tour if Garbage City.
