Explore Alexandria your way

At ToursByLocals, we believe that how you explore is just as important as where you go. That’s why every Alexandria tour is private, flexible, and built around you: Move at your own pace, skip the crowds, make connections and follow your curiosity. Find local guides offering private tours in Alexandria for every interest, including:

History tours: Explore the Catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa with a guide who explains the Greco‑Roman symbols, then stand on the ramparts of the 15th‑century Citadel of Qaitbay to hear lighthouse legends and watch the harbour. Round it out at the Alexandria National Museum or the Roman Theatre at Kom el‑Dikka for a compact, well‑paced route.

Day trip tours: Head west to El Alamein to visit the War Museum and Commonwealth and German cemeteries, with a seaside lunch before the drive back; or go east to Rosetta (Rashid) to tour restored Ottoman houses, see the fort where the Rosetta Stone was found, and take a short boat ride on the Rosetta branch of the Nile.

Food and Drink tours: Start with ta‘meya and foul at Mohamed Ahmed, then sample Alexandrian kebda (liver) sandwiches hot off the griddle on Safar Pasha Street. Visit the Anfushi fish market to pick your catch and have it grilled at a nearby eatery, and finish with Greek‑Egyptian pastries at Délices or a warm sahlab on the Corniche.

Getting around: The Corniche and central areas are fairly walkable and the city tram helps, but distances can be long and traffic slow. For efficient touring, you can book chauffeured tours or ask your guide to include private transportation.

This isn’t a one-size-fits-all itinerary, you can tailor your private tour to match your interests, pace and personality with a local who knows Alexandria inside and out.

Day trip ideas from Alexandria

When you’re ready to look beyond the Corniche, plan day trips from Alexandria that link coast, desert, and the Nile, and build each tour around history, local food, and time to wander.

Cairo: Big on ancient highlights and lively neighbourhoods, with the Pyramids and Sphinx, old quarters, and market streets, and you can balance museum time with a simple lunch and a quick Nile view before returning to the coast.

El Alamein: A coastal drive to Second World War sites and memorials set near quiet beaches, where you can learn the story on the ground, see small museums, and wrap it with fresh seafood in a local spot.

Rosetta (Rashid): A river town of Ottoman-era houses and stone lanes at the Nile’s branch, ideal for exploring wooden mansions, a small fort, and boat-building yards, with time for riverside tea and local sweets.

Wadi El Natrun: Desert monasteries and salt lakes on a straight route from the city, offering peaceful courtyards, frescoes, and simple chapels, and you can adjust the stops to focus on art, history, or quiet time.

A private tour with a local guide is the best way to really get to know a place. Skip the crowds, follow your interests, and see a side of Alexandria most travellers miss.
